Expect the unexpected....Canadiens agree to terms on an 8-year contract with defenseman P.K. Subban MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced Saturday that the team has agreed to terms on an eight-year contract extension with defenseman P.K. Subban (2014-15 to 2021-22). “We are very pleased to have reached a long term agreement with P.K. Subban. This agreement helps consolidate the future of our team. A key element of our group of young veterans, P.K. plays with a high level of intensity every time he steps onto the ice. Despite his young age, he carries a great deal of experience and brings contagious energy to the team. Defensemen of his level are a rare commodity in the NHL” said Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin. canadiens.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=727650

TSN has it ... wonder who balked ... www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=458569Cheers. Edit: I'm very glad this is done ... I had visions of PK not in Montreal in a few years had this not gone through ... so, what's the next controversy? ... I'm sure the TO media will find something ...

Lets hope it wasn't a case of one party or the other "chickening out". Both probably had good arguments and I prefer a win-win to a win-lose situation. It's much better for everyone in continuing the path to the Cup.

Yesterday was classic evil negotiations tactics!
Berg makes an offer......the other side doesn't budge....they come out "shocked".......all of a sudden they are both "us against them".
Deal done.
Cripes, I have to hand it to MB, I thought I was the only one capable of that kind of evil!

Yeah, I think its too much, which sort of gives us more info into what the numbers might have been going in, and I don't think it was Berg lowballing.

Two more things:
a. Is there another contract on its way out of Montreal, and
b. If PK thought he had something to prove before, he sure has a lot to prove now.
He's definitely under the microscope now ... a lot more than before.
Cheers.

I'm glad he is signed, he is an important piece to winning ....I don't think he is worth 9 million, but it's not my money.
We now have 10 million in space for next year to resign Galchenyuk, Gallagher, Bournival, Tinordi and Beaulieu. AND get 3 more players to make a 23 man roster. Theats 8 players.
If the cap rises 5%, next year the cap would be around 73 million. We'd have 14 million for 8 players, 2 or 3 who will be looking at 3 million dollar raises.
There has to be a trade brewing sooner or later

So he gets an extra million more than his side was initially asking for? Happy he's signed for sure, but this is very weird to me...

The way I look at it, it's $1 million more than I had hoped it would take. Is he 'overpaid' now? Maybe a tad. Five years from now, if the cap continues to rise by 6-7% a year, he won't be.
When Drew Doughty signed his 8 year $56 million deal, the cap was $64.3 million. That's 10.88% of the total cap. The cap will have to break $82 million for Subban to take up the same amount of cap space. That's three years from now, based on an annual inflation of 7%.
For the next three years, Subban will be under even more scrutiny than before. IMO, he's handled everything thrown at him to this point, and I have no reason to believe he won't continue to do so. I think his detractors continue to underestimate his resolve and mental toughness. He's an extremely focused person.
Regarding a contract going out, something will have to budge at some point.

So he gets an extra million more than his side was initially asking for? Happy he's signed for sure, but this is very weird to me... I believe the arbitration number was based on a one year deal. Habs are buying up UFA years in this deal, so from that perspective it makes sense that they would have to go over the $8.5 million. According to capgeek, the hit and actual salary are the same every year. No front loading.

Kind of suggests to me that organization might have known the score going into negotiations, anyway ... they may have taken that bluff as far as they could before getting to the point of no return ... just supposition on my part ... might be interesting to know what the arbitrator would have come up with ... Cheers.

The Habs got 6 years of his UFA status. That's good.
Meehan drove up the price for his other clients. Not surprised.
I woke up this morning figuring Berg had to get on the phone and get the best deal for PK. Now he is a huge part of the team going forward.
It's a ton of money, more than I thought it would take. This might look very reasonable in a few years.
Guess the Stamkos and Subban reunion in TO will have to wait a little bit longer.

Cripes, I have to hand it to MB, I thought I was the only one capable of that kind of evil! Well, if I'm MB I'm going to be right in PK's face about backing up that kind of scratch ... he's the highest-paid defenceman in the league now and he's going to have to back that up ... no more drama from the coach ... let the guy play the way he did in the second half of last season ... that would be a start ... Cheers.

At that price and length time, he should help bring the cup back home.Berg was more then generous and management did their job. Now it is up to PK to do his thing. Hopefully MeatHead's leash will not keep PK from performing to his maximum ability. I think like some of the people, $72m was too much, 8/8 would have been more reasonable.

Wouldn't appear so. Capgeek hasn't completely confirmed it yet, but at this point there is no NTC/NMC.

The problem is not what PK "deserved", it's what the market dictates. This is all I wanted to see ... what was PK worth as per the market ... Bergevin probably knew what that was, too ... question, though ... was there anyone out there who honestly felt the Canadiens had a case with a number like that? Cheers.
