Well if the NHL ever decides to scrap the shootout and go with the "beep test" (and why not, right?) we could have our own specialist in Jiri Sekac. The Czech rookie destroyed it yesterday, setting a new Habs record in the process. http://instagram.com/p/s2nHH3MzYa

The Czech rookie destroyed it yesterday, setting a new Habs record in the process. http://instagram.com/p/s2nHH3MzYa The Beep Test was the old Canadian Forces (CF) fitness test ... it's a 20 metre shuttle run (what we used to call it) where you're required to run between the lines using the tones (that become beeps as you get into the serious levels) as a gauge ... you're not allowed to run at your own pace and you have to time your jog-run-sprint to the tones ... I remember the highest level I got was 10.5 and I was 39/40-ish ... if Sekac ran a 14.5 that's pretty impressive (he was probably in the could-be-puking-stage) ... from what I understand (or the skinny back in the day) the CF national soccer team wouldn't look at you unless you achieved a 12/12.5, something like that and that only got you look ... Cheers.

I caught part of the 3rd period, and only saw Andrighetto's goal which was nothing special. Pass in front to him and he shot and scored. He didn't get the shot off especially fast, and the goalie probably should have had it. Impressed, wasn't I? Sekac seemed to be head and shoulders above most of the players, but there were so many guys who are not going to have NHL or perhaps even minor pro careers, that's it's hard to judge. You could tell he can play at a higher pace, though. McCarron still didn't look like he's improved his agility at all. His hands aren't that bad, but he's got to be able to move better on the ice. Straight ahead speed is ok, but the game isn't played in lanes. that was about it for impressions. It took me a while just to figure out who was who so I could watch them more closely. Holland looked better than most, as well.

Holland looked better than most, as well. Great commentary. Thanks. Re Andrighetto, I remember Esposito scoring 76 lucky goals and Gretzky always appearing to lose control of the puck just prior to it going into the net. I coached a kid who couldn't skate well and didn't have a hard shot, but was always in the right spot for an easy 5 foot shot. I like guys who are lucky.

Something I forgot to mention is that I'm not going to put a lot of faith in who looks good and who doesn't in this rookie camp. Some of my worst performances playing soccer were when I was scrimmaging and just getting in some running with a bunch of guys who were pathetic at the sport. You simply can't play your game when you're at a different level than everyone else. They're never where you expect them to be, they never check you the way you expect to be checked and they're just so out of synch with the way 'real' players play that you end up looking like a dork. The only way to look good against guys like that is to simplify your game several levels below where you'd normally play and then you look like a slightly better version of them.
There were way too many bad players in that scrimmage yesterday. It was a real collection of individuals. One play that said a lot to me was when Leinart (?) got hit by a shot in the ankle, and went down, play wasn't stopped, he crawled to the bench and one guy tapped him on the shoulder. Everyone else basically ignored him. That showed just how much of a dog eat dog session this rookie camp is. Nothing to promote teamwork.
I had looked forward to these scrimmages, but after seeing that 3rd period, I'm not sure it would change anyone's mind about ability and potential.
