Reading NWT's post saying that he doesn't think that any player picked in 1999 by the Habs will ever make it, I remembered Buturlin. So, here is a prospect with decent size (6'1, close to 200lb) who was Montreal's first pick in 1999 (second round, our first rounder going to the Islanders for Linden I think). He has, according to RussianProspects.com a good two way game, a good slap shot and decent skills. He scored about 20 points in the past two seasons (needing about 50 games) and has 13 in 33 games now. He also got to play with the Russian national team six times. I know that he was offered a contract and that he refused it, but which player never refused a contract? So, I wonder : will the Habs try to bring him over again, or is it too late (Buturlin is born in september 1981) ? Do the Habs have enough of this kind of prospects, or should Gainey and Savard try to sign him, as a potential "second or third line supporting two way forward" ( www.russianprospects.com/public/profile.php?player_id=3) is always a nice asset ?

The Habs not bringing him over for at least another camp since then has always puzzled me, as he has had some success in Russia. He is now on Lada's top line, even though they have some good name players like Koslov, Zubrus and Semin. He scored his 9th of the season and added an assist in a game on December 27th against Alex Perezhogin's Avangard Omsk team, so he is still producing some points. At 23, he is still well worth a look IMO, but with no NHL hockey looming on the horizon he may end up being an RSL lifer. He is our best hope to get even a single NHL game out of the 1999 draft class, and it isn't looking good right now.
