Been some talk around media outlets of the Canes trading Eric Staal. Wonder if he would be good fit for Habs? Price will be high and contract is 8.24 million for this year and next. Plus, Carolina likely going to ask for our first round pick and a top prospect, along with taking some salary back. Habs only have 3.6 million in cap room, so at least 5 million in salary has to go back. At 30 years old and only signed for one more year it is certainly going to be risky. www.tsn.ca/video/insider-trading-maple-leafs-eyeing-staal-1.106974

Presuming he's healthy….NOW would be the time to go after him. He'd give us immediate offensive punch….and help the PP as well.
The Canes are likely in the McDavid sweepstakes WITH Staal….without him they'd be darn-near guaranteed to get the top pick…if the lottery doesn't bite them.

so . . . which centre does he replace? DD? Pleks? Galchy?? who else goes, to make up the salary difference? and most importantly, is he enough to take us over the top?
bah, it's all moot . . . he's going to Toronto anyway . . . haven't you read the news/blogs or listened to Leaf fans everywhere -- he wants to come to Toronto (maybe they should ask him first).

Yeah he's going to Toronto. Just ask Toronto. I don't know why any other team would get their hopes up.

every player wants to go to Toronto. it's the best hockey city in the world. the winning tradition, the . . .
what's that? ya, winning tradition. we're in the thick of things every year. what do you mean fighting to scrape into the playoffs isn't being in the thick of things? hey, the Leafs have won more cups than the 'Canes, and have been in the finals more times than the 'Canes . . . since the Hurricanes came into the league? . . . well no, since the Leafs came into the league.
look, in the last 5 years the 'Canes haven't even made the playoffs . . . the Leafs have. and this year the Leafs will again . . . we have a real shot at winning the whole thing. all we need is that one player to push us over the top . . . Staal is it. in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't in Ron Francis' office right now demanding a trade here!*

Two years left at a cap hit of $8.25 million. Still capable of ppg numbers, and I think he'd exceed that with our wingers. Good size. Reasonable jam. Always produced in the playoffs. Cup winner.
... if the price was right, I'd consider it. They'd likely be starting with Galchenyuk, and that's where I'd walk away.

Yes, from what I've read, it will be an expensive proposition. No thanks. If you're talking Eller + Beaulieu + spart parts + 2nd round pick, I might go for it. The TO writers were talking Kadri and Gardiner and thinking even that might not get it done. No thanks, not for a guy who might help you for a couple of years and then start to wear out. Those 2003 draft guys are aging, so be careful if you want to pick one up. Mike Richards is a good example of hard wear on an 03 choice.

I think you're looking at a 1st, 2 roster players, plus. Bourque will not be one of the roster players, nor will Eller. I think Galchy would be one of them and I'm with BLNY. the way Pleks has come out of the gate I wouldn't want to send him either. but you've got to give to get.
so the questions: where would Staal fit? 1st line? 3rd? [it better be 1/2 for that salary]
and how much better would he make this team? that much? will his addition (and whatever subtraction) guarantee a ticket to the finals -- because if not, we should just stay with what we've got until we see mid-season positioning.

Staal's cap hit is a sticking point. There are only so many teams that would be willing and able to take on that hit. Of the teams that are able, how many aren't on his NTC list? The NTC kicked in in 2010.
In a perfect world, there would be a center going back the other way and it's Eller or DD. Watching our games so far, it's clear we need to get meaner on defense. Beaulieu doesn't accomplish that. With Subban and Markov ahead of him for the next 3 years, and other puck movers in the system, I think Nathan is the ideal trade bait.
With the team looking largely like a playoff team going forward, that means middling to low picks in each round. That won't blow the Hurricanes skirt up. There's a fair amount of buzz around Scherbak. While I certainly like the idea of him along side Galchenyuk, he is a player our scouts should be able to find again. I'd rather include a DLR, but realistically don't think it would be enough.
Desharnais+Beaulieu+Scherbak = $3.5 million + $.925 million + deferred = $4.425 million. We'd have to add another significant salary to that trade in order to accommodate Staal. As it stands, the Canadiens only have $3.66 million in available space. In order to balance out, you're taking about another $3.8 million player. I'd be hesitant to move Eller as well, because it thins us out down the middle. Throwing darts at the board, I come to Emelin. $4.1 million hit. Signed long term. We can't part with 2 blue liners and not get one back.
DD+Beaulieu+Scherbak+Emelin = $8.325 million.
for
Staal+Gleason = $9.45 million.
Gleason is a left side, left shot. Cheap. Signed through just this year. Not as tall as Emelin, but plays a similar game. Habs take on an extra million in cap, reducing buffer to around $2.66 million. That's still a nice buffer and good enough to land a sizable asset at the deadline.

I think they'd want our anyone's first as well as players, no matter how low that pick might be.

Yes, of course, if the price is too high then no, let someone else have him….but if it's true that he's being shopped, then MB has to kick the tires.

... because if not, we should just stay with what we've got until we see mid-season positioning. I'd look at maybe bringing him in if we're in if we're on a roll come the trade deadline ... the same way the did with Vanek (with no intent of re-signing him) ... that is if he's still available and he hasn't gone to Toronto ... along with John Tavares, Drew Doughty and Hank Lundqvist ... oh yeah, and Mike Babcock ... ref Babcock, the TO media is doing the same thing they did with Brian Burke ... they're all over Babcock-to-Toronto and the season has only begun ... back to Staal ... oh yeah, I'm sure he'll re-sign with the Leafs for a buck ... # likewhateverCheers.

I'm nyet on this. It will cost us the moon to get him and in the end, in two years he can walk away.
I'm pretty certain that ma'boy MB see's that the same way.

after 2 wins in a row the leafs hype is in overdrive. On Global news of all places they had the Staal rumor as a news story, not part of their sports section.

I think a guy like Staal, who can also play the wing, makes us very serious contenders not just to come out of the East, but to win the Cup too. No, we won't be better than say Chicago or LA, but we'll be close enough that Price can be the difference maker. The cost will be huge, yes, but given Carolina's position in the standings it should be very heavily weighted towards picks and prospects, which we can afford. Not a recipe for long term success of course, giving up all your picks and prospects, but we do have a lot of depth in this area at the moment, and we are getting very close to, if not actually in, "the window". So yes, I would look very closely at this.
Assuming Desharnais goes the other way (as a cap casualty, and not as a core piece of the trade):
Pacioretty - Galchenyuk - Parenteau Staal - Plekanec - Gallagher Prust - Eller - Sekac Weise - Malhotra - Bournival
Works just as well if you keep Galchenyuk at wing and put Staal as your number one center.

A concern for me, when looking at his stats, is the fact he's routinely a minus player, and has at times been the worst in that stat on the team. I'm in the camp that says +/- isn't a be all end all stat, but it can be telling. To his credit though, he has been a ppg player in the playoffs and hasn't always had great depth on the wings to work with. It's been 6 seasons since their last playoff run.
If Galchenyuk is a non-starter, and he should be, I don't see the Canes staying at the table without at least one of McCarron or Scherbak involved. Maybe both. Given the significant promise both show, and how much we can truly use NHL versions of both, is it the right move? Staal is just 30. 1.75 years left on his deal.
Doing the deal I outlined above, with our current cap situation, leaves us with $1,166,207 in available cap space. Trade deadline will be around March 2nd. That leaves at most 19 games in the season. That roughly equates to being able to acquire a player at the deadline who has a salary of $5 million. The UFA pool this summer coming is bleak. That means the UFAs being dumped at the deadline won't be all that great either. We'd be looking at forwards like Cole or Erat, Stafford maybe. A defender like Michalek. Maybe, just maybe, if the Jackets continue to tank can get a guy like Foligno.

No trade clauses help players control the process, but once it gets out that a team is trying to trade a player and they are refusing to go it's pretty much the end of them wherever they are. It just becomes an untenable locker room situation. They can refuse to go to certain teams (like Gorges did) but in the end they are always dealt anyways. I can't think of too many players that refused a trade and then ended up staying in the same city. The Muskoka Five maybe, but it didn't exactly work out too well for them, and they all ended up moving on anyways.
So the question then, is will Staal accept a trade to Montreal? As I ranted in another thread I think we have to start believing we are a destination team, and that players WILL accept deals to come here, NTC or not.

Of all the players on my "get" list, Stafford is on top. We may even get him cheap if he has the desire to be on a cup contending team while still staying in the east.
Giving up major asset for stall is a no go. At most he is going to be here for one year and all the cap space he takes up is not worth it if we lose one of our kids because we have no cap space......besides the cost of acquisition.
Besides, if Stafford really wants to stay in Buffalo, he can rent a hotel suit for 3 months and re-sign there next year. If he is asking 5++ million to resign, I'm not sure I want him to stay unless the cap goes up.

Last season, around trade deadline time, there was internet buzz & some of the names mentioned were Drew Stafford & PA Parenteau. I guess deals sometimes take months to complete. He's got good size, is on an expiring contract and is on about a 16 goal pace.

In Montreal, surrounded with a lot more talent, the guy will fit nicely as a hard working, decent talent level player that could score a ton of garbage goals. To me, he has Prust desire/doggedness level with less fighting and more skill. He fits MB criteria perfectly.
