Mathias Brunet is saying in La Presse of this morning thst everything points out to a trade before the deadline. The players expect it, it's in the air.
He said that the Ryan Smyth rumor seems unfounded.
Names mentioned by Brunet: Conroy, Gonchar, Witt, Westley, Boughner, Hill, Walz, Dowd, O'Neil, Sanderson, Bondra.

From that mix the only deal that makes sense from a Habs perspective is O'Neill and Hill. But what would we be giving up?
Seeing how Carolina is trying to cut salary that would mean only a couple of possible scenarios.
1) Zednik, a prospect
2) 2 prospects which one is named Komisarek.
But where did Geoff Sanderson come into all of this? Surely we wouldn't trade for just Sanderson? And any deal with Calgary and you got to think we would want more than Conroy? A deal for Iginla was apparently nixed because we would give up Komisarek .... so again that makes me believe Carolina is the best ticket.
As for Bondra .... well he has a no-trade clause and he already turned coming to Montreal once in his career. I don't think he has seen much to change his mind on that.
Wes Walz would be a good pick-up but this team needs more than a third line checker / penalty killer. I would think that if Gainsy is going to make a trade before the deadline he wants a solid defenseman and a strong forward who has the potential to produce ........ So to me only the Carolina scenario makes sense ..... so those other names must just be there for window dressing ..... they don't make sense to me.

I’d be surprised if it happened, but a Witt and Bondra deal would work for me. Witt would replace Souray (at least in the rugged defenseman category) and Bondra could replace Dagenais on Ribeiro’s wing.
I’d offer Hossa and Plekanec and see where it gets us. I’d throw in our first round pick, if they throw in their second.

Spector's has something about Sean Hill making a return to Habsville. Hill is decent. He's got some size, and ability at both ends. I'd welcome his presence if he can play the left side, but would be unwilling to give up much youth to get him.
I have little interest in Bondra. Peter is a guy that legit contenders will have interest in, but we shouldn't. Peter is old, and shouldn't be expected to contribute long term. This team isn't looking for quick fixes.
Witt? Well Brendan has some respect around the league. He's turned into a solid defender and has the style of play we could use more of. His +/- isn't great this year, but chalk some of that up to weak goaltending and a bad team.
Boughner? He's decent, physical, and reportedly a good team guy. He wouldn't hurt us.
Geoff Sanderson is someone I'm definitely not interested in. It used to be that he could only produce with Andrew Cassels. Now he can't even do that. Geoff is living off of a couple of good years in Hartford 10 years ago. Aside from skating he brings little to the table.
Wesley is too much money for too little defenceman. Glen is good, but gets paid a great salary. No thanks. There are cheaper solutions that will work just as well.
Walz. Wes is one of the fastest around, and can chip in a little offense. He'd be an upgrade on Juneau. He showed what he's capable of in the playoffs last year.
Dowd is an old marginal NHLer. He's bounced around for 12+ years.
O'Neil needs a change of scenery for sure. I don't know about his attitude, but his finishing skills would be welcome with the two centres we have. Despite a rough +/- in the regular season, he's shown what he can do within a system. If the price was right (Hossa and something else) I'd get him.
Conroy? Been there, done that.

He's a rental player who not only is old and an upcoming UFA, but on the verge of retirement. He said earlier in the season that he would like to finish in Washington because he doesn't expect to be playing much longer.

I have to agree on that front and I'm sure if a deal is done it will be for somebody that can contribute down the road.Bondra probably will be moved but to a real contender who could offer him a legit shot at the cup. I hope something is imminent this team needs a vitamin B shot. HFTO

How about Lang ? For Hossa and Plekanec ?
Caps in salary dump mode and we could take on some salary will all these guys leaving next year (YP, Juneau, etc ...)
By getting a guy like Lang, a couple of questions would need to be answered.
1) How much of Lang's salary is Washington willing to pick up on his 3 years at 5 million per season remaining ? 2) Among our 3 centers, Koivu would be best suited to be the 3rd line center. Would he be willing to become one at this point of his career ? 3) Is Lang the type of guy you go to war with in the playoffs if he is the main go to guy. On a team like Detroit with Yzerman, Shanahan, etc, it might work. But on the current Habs team ? dunno.

Names mentioned by Brunet: Conroy, Gonchar, Witt, Westley, Boughner, Hill, Walz, Dowd, O'Neil, Sanderson, Bondra. The only player here that I would REALLY want on the Habs is Brendan Witt. He's what I like to call a "young veteran" (29 yrs. old) and until the NHL stopped keeping track of hits, he was always one of the top three finishers in that category. He's a player who would supply a major physical presence on the Habs blueline. As BC pointed out, Bondra would upgrade our 2nd line, but if he's available I believe the price to get him would not be worth it because I'm sure there would be a bidding war for his services. Rather than spend useful assets on him, I would prefer to promote a guy like Balej and see what he can do.
