Jonathan Ferland appears determined to put the injury and appendicitis that slowed him earlier in the season well in the past, following a strong weekend performance against St. John’s with two shots and another solid effort against the Wolves. While Locke was held off the scoresheet to at least temporarily snap the point-per-game average he had established over the previous five contests, the rookie remains in impressive form, dominating the club with a plus-7 differential (the next-best is a plus-2 shared by four players) and standing just four points behind Albany’s Zach Parise for the overall AHL rookie scoring lead.
Andrei Kostitsyn, out of action since suffering a shoulder injury in Belarus’ relegation round game against Slovakia at the World Junior Championship on Jan. 2, will possibly return to the lineup against Cincinnati. So too might fellow Montreal talent Ron Hainsey, missing since Dec. 27 with a concussion. A healthy Hainsey would no doubt benefit the team’s defensive corps, which was forced to press forward Benjamin Carpentier into service on Tuesday. Carpentier, it should be noted, performed ably in his role, ending the night one of just three Bulldogs to finish the game on the positive side of the plus/minus ledger.
In suffering another close loss, Hamilton extended its run of defeats by two goals or less. Doug Jarvis’ charges last loss a game by three tallies or more on Nov. 27, when they were upset by St. John’s at Copps Coliseum by a 4-1 final. Since that time, they’ve dropped a total of 10 games by a total of just 13 goals; from an optimist’s perspective, the run indicates the club has been increasingly playing inspired, competitive hockey. As it learns to win the close games, its record and standing should improve markedly.
