Here's a column from Scott Cullen on how successful certain picks are. It's an interesting read and points out what the odds are of getting an NHL player in certain rounds and goes further into the quality of those players (as compared to simply picking a guy who plays a minimum of 10 games in the NHL). Habs have their share of good picks and bad picks. www2.tsn.ca/fantasy_news/story/?id=455673

Nice find 17. I find it interesting that goalies picked in the top five have a greater rating (probability of success) than defenders picked in the top 5. It kind of goes against the notion of not using high picks on goalies. When you factor in how few have been picked in the top 5 in the last 15 years, and the effect DiPietro alone had on the probability ...

Too bad about Terry Ryan ... I remember hearing that the Habs table deflated a bit when Shane Doan was selected just before they were to pick ... the Habs picked Ryan which wasn't a bad selection at the time ... unfortunately he couldn't stay healthy ...
Cheers.

Cheers. Terry Ryan now has a book out Terry Ryan: Tales of a First Round Nothing He recently was interviewed and recalled the day he was drafted .... He never dreamed he'd be chosen by his favourite NHL team, and, even as a cocky kid minutes away from hearing his name called, had no reason to think the Habs were his destiny.
"I was in the elevator on the way to my seat with my dad and a couple of more, and Doug Robinson, who was the head scout for Montreal. Montreal was one of the only teams that didn't interview me at all. Nothing. So, I didn't really expect to talk to them. San Jose was picking twelfth and they told me they were picking me," Ryan remembers. "So, anyway, in the elevator, the draft was just starting and I was actually late to my seat. Doug Robinson said "Congrats on a good year. Western Hockey League power forward. I like to see that." I said, "Thanks Mr.Robinson. I think a lot of your organization." And on the way off the elevator he said, "Congrats on a good Memorial Cup." And I said, "Jeez, I didn't play in the Memorial Cup." So, I went a little closer to try and get a read on him, and I said, "Okay, Mr.Robinson, I'll see you." And he said, "Okay, thanks Shane." So, fifteen minutes before they drafted me, the Canadiens thought I was Shane Doan, by appearance."Terry Ryan was assured by the Boston Bruins that they would select him 9th overall. When Doan was selected, I guess Robinson was the most surprised man in the arena. So, you really have to wonder, if Montreal had done their homework on Ryan.

watching Arizona game couldn't help but think what could have been if only Doan was available to us back in '95. What a difference one slot in draft order has made in our history
