Get Preds 1st this year, Brandon Leipsic and Olli Jokinen. There were rumours floating around that the Preds were interested in getting Franson back.
Per TSN.

Well that's our chance to get Franson... The leafs can't even win a trade, they are in full tank mode!

Crap
I really wanted Franson. Not that the Leafs would trade with us, but we could have match that deal.
Who is next on the Habs radar?

I guess taking Jokinen (UFA)back was required to get the 1st rounder.

There is talk that Franson is playing hurt but his play in the last few weeks has really dropped off. He has made some glaring errors. Maybe now that his situation has settled he'll play better.

Jokinen is a definite cap dump. He's been horrible apparently. We'll see if he plays or if the Leafs can flip him.

Cheers.

My buddy, who is a trivia buff and has a flare for connecting historical dots, has texted me to remind me of an email he wrote two trading deadline ago ... When the Leafs trade a defenseman around the deadline or at the deadline, the team receiving the Leaf d-man wins the Cup a awful lot of the time.

Preds have been without Ellis for more than a month. Likely the big reason behind the move. They were a balanced team before the trade and they didn't shake up their core to add.

Franson looked good to me last night, but I still hate the idea of giving up a 1st rounder for a rental. No doubt Nashville feels they are close to a Cup and needed that position solidified. I don't think we're a Cup team yet, despite Carey. Maybe 2 years away. Oh, we might win it, if we're lucky and avoid injuries and our opponents suffer key injuries (meet LA in the finals for example and any one of Doughty, Quick, Williams or Kopitar get injured. Toffoli might even do it. They've been much better since he returned from injury. That team has scoring problems, so an injury to a scorer would hurt them. Say Toews or Kane gets hurt for Chicago. Etc. etc. That's too much to ask though, even if we might get to the conference finals without injury help. Carey could take us through 2 rounds.
Sekera is also available from Carolina and is a responsible d-man. He'll probably cost a first rounder too, now that Leafs gave up Franson for one. If this was a weak draft, no problem, but this year is especially tough to pay that cost.

Price - Rinne Subban - Webber Desharnais - Riberio Galchenyuk - Forsberg Markov = Jossi

Jamie Macoun to Detroit in 1998 as well, comes to mind I don't have an exhaustive list, cause I don't know all the trades within a month of the deadline .. and there have been Toronto Defense traded who didn't win the Cup too (Skoula for instance)

I have an old high school buddy who ended up being a junior scout for the Bruins until Keith Gretzky moved in with his own people ... he said that it was the Kaberle trade that helped them the most in their 2011 Cup run ... I found that pretty interesting ... as an aside, I read somewhere that the Bruins are looking for a centre and I was kind of glad Santorelli didn't land there ... Cheers.

Nonishanahan are hoping to get Jokinen's game back in gear in order to flip him at the deadline.

If the Predators win the Cup, or at least come close, then they win big. If the Leafs … well, nothing good will ever happen to the Leafs, so we don’t have to worry about that. Sean McIndoe

So, after a day or two of the Toronto media milking the "Panthers are interested in Kessel" rumour….both Nick Kypreos and Damien Cox say it's unfounded/bogus (during the second intermission of the Leafs-Panthers game).
