Alexander Perezhogin is getting closer to being able to participate in the world hockey championship with many Russian stars.
The Habs prospect was once again selected for his country's national team, this time for the ''Sweden Games'', which start thursday in Stockholm.
Perezhogin will be on a roster loaded with talent. Kovalev, Kovalchuk, Datsyuk, his future teammates Andrei Markov, Semin, Frolov and Afinogenov will also be there. Our 21 year old hockey player will be one of the youngest players on the team.
It will be interesting to see what Perezhogin will do against a Czech team loaded with names like Hejduk, Elias, Hamrlik, Havlat, Bulis, Prospal and Kaberle.
Sweden will have Zetterberg, Huselius, Tarnstrom, Ekman and Modin. The 4th team in the tournament, team Finland, wasn't able to convince their big stars to join them. Players like Berg, Vaananen, Hagman and Rita will be on their team.
Perezhogin was difficult to ignore for the hierarchy of the national team. The 2001 first round pick has 7 points in his last 6 games for Omsk. His team is unbeaten in 8 games and went from 11th to 6th place in the RSL standings. The future Habs forward has 25 points, including 9 goals, in 34 games.
The young man would have played in Hamilton this year if it wasn't for a one year suspension last spring. The Habs - who did not manage the decision well since Perezhogin was reacting to a stick he received on his own head - decided to send him to his old team in Russia. The decision has turned out to be a great one to this day.
Perezhogin will be able to join the Habs this year if the NHL starts up again. The NHL, it seems, is not obligated to honour AHL suspensions and Perezhogin is not signed with Omsk for the whole year. ''All I am waiting for is Bob Gainey's phone call, he said yesterday from his cell phone, after a practice with the national team in Moscow. If they ask me to come, I will be there. I really feel ready for the NHL. I can't wait to play in Montreal.
A telephone conversation with Perezhogin allows us to notice the considerable progress he has made learning english. You have to ask him questions slowly, but he comes up with an answer you can understand. Back in october 2003, he did not know one word of his future work language. ''I took courses last year in Hamilton. And this year, I try to have a lot of conversations in english with Norm Maracle and Jaromir Jagr. There will be no problems for me when I will be in Montreal because I practice everyday.''
What explains his recent success ? ''The coach is giving me a lot of ice time recently. I am on a good line with Andrei Kovalenko and my good friend, a center named Anton Kuryanov''
The young man issues a timid laugh when we tell him on the phone that the front office of the Habs sees him eventually on the the top 2 lines of the team. ''I don't know what to say. We always like hearing such things.''
