First, this isn't a trade rumour. It stems from Pittsburgh beat writer, Rob Rossi, speculating on potential fallout of Pens missing the playoffs and suggests that neither player would be too interested in hanging around on a team on the decline, etc. It might be the easiest way for the Pens to get legit scoring depth. Trade one for a good second line center, and elitish scorer, and picks/prospects.
Second, if you could have one who would you prefer and what would you pay? Would you want either?

I'd take either but I'd trade Malkin before Crosby. Not sure what (from a Habs' perspective) I'd give up for either cause I can't fathom giving up as much as it would surely take to get either one.

Their no move/trade clauses combined with their salaries will limit where they go. When you place those limitations, it does hinder return somewhat. A Habs offer would have to be mostly futures laden. It would also no doubt have to start with Galchenyuk. A team that could offer them an elite shutdown defender might be most appealing, along with adding scoring to the wing.

and the talking heads in Toronto suggest Malkin for Kessel. Toronto has to add, but Kessel would be without doubt the most talented winger in their prime that Crosby would have ever played with. Kessel, a first, and maybe a guy like Polak. Polak gives the Pens a stay-at-home guy to play with all the puck movers they have. It's not unreasonable return.

Everyone else in the league would take Crosby, Montreal should take Malkin. The way teams take liberties with us, we'd lose Crosby with the first check .... I want the durable guy

I think there are other teams with more to offer...such as the Leaf scenario above. If they don't get McDavid, that pick might be very attractive to Pittsburgh. Leafs get Malkin, for example and lose Kessel. They get badly needed strength up the middle. Pittsburgh gets a sniper and a surefire top line guy or top 4 dman.

I'm not entirely sure Malkin is any more durable. Since 2009-10, games missed:
09-10: 15 10-11: 39 11-12: 7 12-13: 17 13-14: 22 14-15: 15
That's a lot of time. It wouldn't completely deter me, but it would and should factor into an offer.

Crosby's missed 160 games, almost all of the missed time from concussions.
Malkin has missed 4 games from a concussion, so that's a mild one ... His missed time has been from a knee surgery, (now corrected), and a foot issue, (I'd guess plantar fasciitis

Malkin without a doubt, I believe Crosby may not have a lengthy career and he no longer dominates as he once did with the puck.

The other day I was streaming tsn 690, they were talking about a play in game one vs the rags that one of the feeds caught. Crosby broke down the wing through the neutral zone, wide open, Scuderi had plenty of time to make the pass, but didn't see him. Crosby's reaction was "spoiled baby-like". They went on to question his leadership qualities.
I've played wih guys like that. It's frustrating, but you tend to put up with it. Even though you just kind of ignore it, it's still there for everyone to see. Does nothing for team morale.

And last night's Pens' win shows why I wouldn't trade Crosby. He can carry a team on his back. Give him solid wingers and he's unstoppable. He's still the best player in the world as far as I'm concerned.

They put up with it (if there's anything to put up with, given it was one example) because he does things very few others can do and those kinds of guys naturally get more leeway than anyone else. You don't throw the baby out with the bath water. I've never thought Crosby was a whiner toward his teammates, though. To refs and other players, oh yeah. Frustration must be getting to him.

Rangers big defense, and speed up front, combined with absolutely no one worth passing the puck to and voila.

I bet Malkin's playing hurt. That and absolutely no transition game. Maata, Letang and Derrick Pouliot all injured. Yikes.

Top 3 dmen out. For us it would be no PK, no Markov, no Petry. We'd be fubar.

Cheers.

Just read a Tweet from Pierre LeBrun ... he was talking with Pittsburgh and they're not moving Malkin ... they're hanging onto five core players ... Cheers. MAF Letang Maatta Malkin Crosby That's $31.2 million in cap commitment for 5 players. Kunitz and Hornqvist have multiple years left on their deals for another $8.1 million. So, $39.3 million for 7 players. Maybe you find a taker for Kunitz, but unlikely. That means, they've got conservatively $30 million of space (including any bonuses) to fill out the remaining 13 spots. A $3 million avg salary for those players seems great, but they desperately need scoring wingers. Those aren't cheap. UFA market is horrible, so you're looking at trades. Cap being what it is, I don't see potential trade partners lining up to take on the likes of Kunitz. They'll want picks and prospects. The Pens don't have much of either. They shouldn't trade away a guy like Sutter. I thought he was one of their most visible players against the Rangers. He's not a scorer though. He's a 2nd-3rd liner player. They could decide to sit tight and hope. Their depleted blue line was a huge issue. Healthy, it won't completely solve their scoring problems. Someone from the existing core group has to go.
