This is a domino move imo. Carl is apparently looking for long term and $5 million a year. Given that ROR is apparently looking for 8 years and $7.5 million per, and that the Avs have essentially said that demand means he'll be traded, I figure Sakic hopes he can sign Soderberg and have him as a replacement.

A cheaper ROR replacement if they are able to sign him before July 1st and cannot get a reasonable deal done with ROR (reading on twitter he is asking for huge bucks and term). The Avs could use more help on D at the end of the day. Wonder if we could help!

Given ROR's demands, who knows. I think the Avs should have moved him last year. His demands limit his value. Yeah, he's got a year left at $6 million, but he's not a $6 million player imo - let alone the apparent $7.5 million he wants on his extension.

Avs banking that a guy like Soderberg can come in and produce 50-60 points in a freer system than he played in in Boston.
Regarding ROR trade, what about the Coyotes? Maloney is clearly shopping #3. If the Avs offered ROR and their #10 pick, would that do it for Maloney? Coyotes need to rebuild, but they can't do it slowly. Can Strome come in right away and lead? Coyotes certainly have ample cap space to give ROR whatever he wants. Avs get the third pick and take Strome and you have McKinnon and Strome.

Avs have signed Soderberg. 5 yrs at $4.75 million per. Full NTC in first 2 years, limited in last 3.
