Not the most interesting comment in the article ... Rumblings: Bergevin says Habs won't have problem signing Alex GalchenyukPierre LeBrun, NHLThe Montreal Canadiens re-signed Jeff Petry and Torrey Mitchell after the season ended, which fueled speculation they might need to move money. But general manager Marc Bergevin says that’s not the case. "We’re fine with the cap, we have no problem with the money, we’re good. We’ll sign Chucky and move on," Bergevin said Saturday, referring to restricted free agent forward Alex Galchenyuk. In the meantime, Bergevin doesn’t feel a particular need to make a move, but he’s always open to an opportunity. "I’m always listening," said Bergevin. "Obviously our strength is our goalie and our defense. If we could add some scoring, it would be nice. But again, there’s not much cap flexibility. We have some kids that are pushing in the minors. So we’ll see what happens at camp. But I’ll keep my ears and eyes open [on the trade market]. ... I’m comfortable with the team we have." ESPN - the rest

I saw that quote earlier and if one was to take Bergevin's comments at face value (which one should never do), that would scare me. He's comfortable with a team that can't score? But, like I said, never believe Berg's comments without a lie detector confirmation test, a priest's certificate of authenticity, and a unanimous UN vote of support.

Yeah, we have some Top 6ers who are just tearing it up in the AHL. Right…
If he's comfortable with the team we have, then I'm comfortable not watching Price have to stand on his head game after game, while we manage between 2 and 3 goals on a good night.

and even more have to be comfortable with not buying any merchandise, or tickets to the games. I've been very comfortable with that for years.

Yeah, the Berg tends to like a little media misdirection every now and then and does not like negotiating or giving up his plans in the media. There were reports from one of the French media that he was talking to a few UFAs this weekend. We shall see, but it is an underwhelming group.

Haven't seen an NHL game since before the lockout ... the games in Ottawa are the closest to me, so I tend to go there, if I go at all ... I tried going last year but it always fell through, and in a way I'm kind of glad I didn't fork out the dough ... I haven't bought any NHLPA items in years ... the extent of my allegiances are live games on the tube ... they're getting a cut of that too, eh ... Cheers.

Might be a ploy with some trading partners to drop prices too.... Saying we are happy with what we got so make it worth our while and we will talk...always think he plays his angles with comments like this..... Same with Galchenyuk may never play center...i think he did it for negotiations as we all know we need that guy playing center at some point

I remember Marc Bergevin saying the organization is welcoming some new pros into it ... Nikita Scherbak, Mike McCarron, Brett Lernout, Mark MacMillan (check out comments on Mac) and mentioned by name ... training camp just took on a whole new mood ... these guys might be hungry enough to push the veterans in camp ... hopefully some of them force Bergevin to make a hard decision ... on the other hand, Berg knows the team has to get better like now ... signing Jeff Petry and Torrey Mitchell made us better, but the club can't go into next year with the same top-6 ... I see the Atlantic Division starting to become one of the toughest divisions in either conference ... keeping up is a continual process and scoring a few more goals next year would help that long ... Cheers.

The more I think about it, the more I fall into the camp of signing Alex to the exact same deal Brendan got. 6 years, $3.75 million a year. If we sign him to a bridge deal, and he blows up like we hope, we'll be shelling out $6-7 million a year or more. Lock him down long term to a fair sum. Then, when Plekanec and Prust are off the books, and DD only has a year left, you'll be in a really good position to look at adding an elite center to pair with Alex.
Salary commitments for 2016-17, as it stands now, are $49.225 million. Chucky's $3.75 brings that to $52.975. The only RFAs at that point are DSP, Pateryn, Tokarski, and AHL filler. In other words, if the cap doesn't change, Bergevin will have almost $18.5 million to woo a big fish, sign a couple of RFAs, and fill Plekanec's and Prust's roster spots with cheaper alternatives.

All true, but he can't really argue that he's any more important or better than Gallagher. Benchmark is set.

Better hope it's his way of mis directing the East will be a lot tougher and we already have our hands full playing the like of Ottawaa Buffalo ....only Boston really stepped back. I've said it before who our top 6 who's going to get appreciably better aside from Galchenyuk? ....Patches and Gallagher are at their peak and how long before Pleks starts nosing downward and how much can DD improve??... Something better happen ....nobody in the A is cracking the top 6 I'd be scared to do an honest evaluation comparison right now of all the other teams of the East' s top 6 Yes we have the goalie but if the report are true despite not missing playoff time, this was the 3rd year in a row Price has not been 100% ...I say you better get that burden off your prized possession sooner than later. Tampa's is the best, if the triplets continue their play. Washington has second line question marks, but a great first line. The Islanders should score goals again, but they're not imposing. We're not the best, nor are we the worst imo. Our defensive unit, and our goalie are our forte for now.

All true, but he can't really argue that he's any more important or better than Gallagher. yet. different player, different set of expectations. he can easily say bridge contract, 2 years, then we'll see. a risk, of course, but he won't be worse off by waiting. hope he agrees with your assessment, though. will make life much easier for MB.

We're not the best, nor are we the worst imo. Our defensive unit, and our goalie are our forte for now. As a top 6 forward group it doesn't look as bad as it actually is. The difference, and the reason we have little chance of winning the Cup is that the real contenders have at least one elite forward, usually a centre. We compare well enough with Ottawa and while they don't have an elite centre, the Rangers have better offensive centres than we do in Brassard and Stepan. The rest are well ahead of us. Tampa, Islanders, the Pens, Detroit and the Caps all have very good or elite centres. Heck, I'd swap our centres for Buffalo's centres in a heartbeat. I guess what I'm saying is that we aren't that close to those teams on the list, even though we're ok as a group.

Brassard and Stepan aren't any better than Plekanec imo. Neither have a history of scoring goals at the rate Plekanec has. Neither has put up more than 60 points, though Stepan did put up nearly a ppg in the lock out season. Plekanec plays in all three situations and typically gets assigned the other team's best line. Stepan is likely the most physical of the three, but that would be the only edge either Ranger.

Would you rather have a combo of Brassard and Stepan or Pleks and DD? I guess that's how I looked at it. There's not much difference in quality between us and the Rangers in that regard, which is probably why neither made the finals.

Nash scored 42? Max 37. Similar point totals. Both wingers are sort of in the driver's seat. I do think Plekanec is the best goal scorer of the 4, even if Brassard might be the flashiest.

Cheers. hockeyscap.com specifying $7.59 million in space. www.hockeyscap.com/teams/canadiensPAP has been spread over two years. I'm still in the camp of signing Galchenyuk to the same deal as Gallagher. If he'll accept it, it would leave Berg with $3.84 million in space. He's got Flynn, Bournival, Tinordi, Nygren, Tangradi, and Thomas to make RFA decisions on. Tangradi is an easy one. AHL contract, or goodbye. Thomas, Bournival, and Tinordi should be on two-way contracts. If they don't like it, move them for a pick. Nygren is tough. I'd like to get him back to St John's so they can really gauge what they have. If he won't sign, just cut the bait I guess. Flynn, I'm not sure. You could sign him as the 13 forward. He'd be the only one of the bunch guaranteed to count against the cap from that group. His hit was $.6375 million on his last deal. $700k or there abouts. If hockeyscap.com is right, that would mean with Flynn on the roster and the rest on the farm that Berg would have $3.14 million space. That's ideal for the deadline. If Nhlnumbers is right, add about 600k to that. EDIT: If Tinordi is the 7th D, my estimation would be that his contract takes somewhere between 750-1 million off the cap. Figure safely $3 million. If we replace PAP internally, that comes down closer to two with salary and any performance bonuses.

Ferraro and McGuire talking about Beleskey ... McGuire thinks Habs in play for him potentially, I think it's throwing darts but Ferraro holds him to task. Ray says to get the minutes to justify the cost, he's behind Max. If Galch doesn't move to center, he's 2nd line ... then both chime in and say that Galch SHOULD be at center. Just food for thought and opinions that back up the boards' opinion.
