Would you want Girgensons?

After seeing how much the Sabres had improved themselves over the draft, and seeing how deep they were at centre and how weak on the wings and on D, I began to wonder if they might not be a good trade partner for the Habs. At centre, they have O'Reilly, Eichel, Reinhart, Girgenseon's and Ennis. On D, though, they have Gorges, Bogosian and Ristolainen. Meszaros is next on the depth chart and that's not saying much. At LW, they have Evander Kane, Marcus Foligno, McGinn and Moulson, pretty good. At RW, their roster shows Gionta, Kaleta and Jerry D'Amigo.

They might shift Eichel to RW, but it's clear that D and RW are not strong suits for them, but they're damn deep at centre.

Of the guys they'd have, I think the guy I'd want, and might be available, is Girgensons. They won't trade Reinhart or O'Reilly or Eichel. We have a combination of Emelin, Gilbert, Tinordi, McCarron and Scherbak to offer, along with some B level defense prospects like Dietz.

I'm not proposing trading all those guys for Girgensons, but I think you could get your big, high scoring centre (I happen to think he's got a lot of upside) for say, Gilbert/Emelin, Tinordi and McCarron. Girgensons got 15 and 15 with Buffalo, in 61 games. When I watched him play, I loved him. Fortunately, he's had the chance to play centre and progress at that position. He seems to have a lot of drive and determination.

A side benefit is that Berg has dealt with Tim Murray before, and that Murray is one of those guys I think can be poached.

He's a really talented player. ROR has played all three positions I believe, and Ennis has also played the wing. I don't know what they plan to do with ZG, but I'd be really surprised if they parted with him.

They could certainly move some centres over to wing, but the guys they have are best at centre. Reinhart's vision and passing are made for the centre position. Centre is where O'Reilly excels. I think they could give up one of their current centres to strengthen other parts of the team. We'd be giving up a lot of potential with McCarron, so it goes both ways. It's just a thought, as the SAbres are really loaded at the area where we are most weak, and they have no CAP issues and lots of good prospects and draft picks. I'm sure they want to ice a winner after last year's brutal showing.

Not a terrible thought. We'd certainly have to look at sending a center back in the deal I think.
