Just a question about Winnipeg......I've been offered a nice promotion here at work....the only issue is that I would have to transfer to Winnipeg.
Is there anyone here that can tell me anything at all about the city. I've only driven by it, I know nothing really about the city.
Any kind of incite would be helpful!!

oh what can I say . . .
winterpeg deserves the name . . . and the jokes of two seasons: 10 months of winter, 2 months of mosquitoes.
HUGE city . . . sprawls and sprawls and sprawls. half a million people when I lived there, and it took 3/4 of an hour or more to from side to side.
dead downtown. right beside inner city decay.
did I say cold?
nice new football stadium, decent universities, NHLish hockey team with near-Hab fervor.
enough to do entertainment-wise. great folk festival.
used to drive to Selkirk for Skinners hot dogs.
oh oh oh . . . BDI (the Bridge Drive Inn): fantastic ice cream.
mostly friendly people, too.

Thanks Franko.....I asked the company to fly me out for a weekend to check out the plant and to get a feel of the city before I make any kind of decision. Is there anything that is a must see?

A friend went a couple of times to Winnipeg and didn't like the place, thought there was a lot of racial tension, with a lot of poor aborigonals and rich white folks. He saw a street fight between drunk men with broken beer bottles and it didn't seem like an unsual occurence.
I'd make sure to spend some time downtown and see if you like the feel of the place. You could also shop for homes online, then in person go check out the neighborhoods, which might give you a better idea of where you might end up living.

Portage Avenue is a long street with not much there, though I understand some revitalization is being done. Just north of Portage and west of Main is a picture of urban decay (look up urban decay in the dictionary and you'll see a picture . . . ). It was a sellers market the last couple of years: "list price" is your floor starting price for negotiations -- bid high, bid higher.

Going with this, I have a friend who's a former Mountie and he told me there are areas in and around Winnipeg that they, as police officers, simply won't go into ... having said that, Mrs Dis and I have several friends who live in Winnipeg and they have the same complaints Franko cited, but they continue to live there ... Cheers.

Thanks Franko.....I asked the company to fly me out for a weekend to check out the plant and to get a feel of the city before I make any kind of decision. Is there anything that is a must see? There was a lot of construction going on when we were there last summer ... noticed a lot of western cities are now investing in perimiter roads that allow you to bypass the city rather than go through it ... Winnipeg was getting this done when we were there ... as for the city, itself, it was okay ... some of the original neighbourhoods have a unique system (originated from France from what I understand) where you have main roads out front of the house and access alley ways behind them ... you'd use these alley ways to get to your parking spot ... people I've talked to have gotten used to the layout, but when it snows hard it becomes equally as hard getting out of those alley ways (first the city has to plow the snow out, then you dig yourself out) ... only made into the city centre a couple of times to see some friends and to go out for supper ... another friend wanted to show us the Polo Park Shopping Centre ... other than the impressive food court, it's like any other mall ... oh yes, they have indoor plumbing, too ... the floodway system is also quite impressive, but it's there for a reason ... some people love the city, some people got used to it and some hated it ... I guess it's all you make it, man ... Cheers.

Thanks everyone....when they mentioned Winnipeg I wasn't excited about it....but a 25% increase in pay is nothing to sneeze at. To be honest they mentioned a few months ago that they we're opening in Ottawa, and I've been eyeing that opportunity, However I'm guessing I wouldn't be the only one.

The perimeter road that Dis was talking about has been around for a long while -- the south highway was done in the . . . I'll say 70s though it might have been late 60s. There are major roads throughout the city to get you from place to place, but it still takes a while. It's a city, what can I say? it has its problems and it has its benefits.

One factor I'd consider is the ease (or lack thereof) of getting out of town. Basically I'd be interested in how convenient air travel is from Winnipeg. Are there lots of flights to a reasonably close major hub? For example, there are lots of AC and WS flights to Toronto, but the flight is 2 1/2 hours. Calgary is a little closer with good flights to choose from (although not quite as frequent as to Toronto). Minneapolis is actually a better bet for a hub, as Delta has multiple direct flights that are less than 1 1/2 hours. Minneapolis is Delta's third largest hub in the US so you can probably get just about anywhere from there pretty easily.
