Dogs come back to edge Runners

HAMILTON, ON – The Hamilton Bulldogs overcame a two-goal deficit with three unanswered goals in a 4-3 win over the Edmonton Road Runners on Sunday afternoon at Copps Coliseum. The Bulldogs now trail the Road Runners by just three points for the fourth and final playoff position in the AHL’s North Division. Hamilton has played 61 games on the season, one more than Edmonton.
With the win, Hamilton’s overall record now improves to 26-24-6-5, including a record of 14-10-2-3 in 29 games at Copps Coliseum this season.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring on the power play at 12:54 of the first period when Dan Jancevski posted his fourth goal of the season. Steve Ott took a drop pass from Corey Locke and fed a pass over to Jancevski who one-timed a shot into the back of the net.
Edmonton would take a 3-1 lead in the first period with three goals in 3:20. At 13:38, Mike Bishai got the Road Runners on the scoreboard with a shot that barely trickled over the goal line. Then Rocky Thompson scored his first goal of the season at the 16:23 mark, giving the Runners a 2-1 lead. Only 33 seconds later, Edmonton increased their lead to 3-1 when Sean McAslan rounded out the scoring of the first frame.
With two goals in the second period, Hamilton would even the score 3-3. Forward Steve Ott notched his 17th goal of the season during a two-man advantage. Then with 44 seconds remaining in the period, Andrei Kostitsyn broke down the left wing and fired a shot that beat goaltender Tyler Moss low on the stick side.
Hamilton took the lead at 5:39 of the third period when Benjamin Carpentier made the score 4-3. Despite a last second flurry by the Road Runners, Carpentier’s goal stood as the game-winner.
After allowing three goals on ten shots in the first period, Yann Danis shut out Edmonton for the final two periods and finished with 27 saves on the game. Road Runners goaltender Tyler Moss stopped 27 of 31 shots, while suffering the loss.
The Bulldogs next game is on Wednesday, March 9th against the Albany River Rats at Copps Coliseum.
