I doubt very much it was a strategic move to "buy" the captaincy. i.e. by invoking Beliveau's philanthropy.
Big Jean did a ton for the community (and for hockey) for decades....I see nothing inappropriate with PK mentioning Beliveau as a mentor when $10 million is being donated.
If anything, it shows respect, humility, deference.

It's nice seeing athletes giving back ... Patrick Roy did that, PK Subban is doing it now, too ... don't forget about LeBron James, who will now pay for 1,100 kids to go to college ... Chapeau!!

Good on PK. Even my boss, who's from Boston and is a huge Bruins fan, admits that this makes him a PK Subban fan, despite the bitter rivalry.

One Tweet said his French was very good. I understand he'd been taking lessons, but even then, lessons are one thing, executing something else altogether. He must have practiced a lot.
Just another example of why PK is such a grand person and a class act.

What a class guy....I really hope the team names him captain. I think if he gets the C, he'll be right up there with Beliveau and Saku as far as legacy!

I love this man.
Saku donated a ton, helped buy a CT scanner for the Montreal General. Patrick Roy wrote a $500,000 cheque to the Children's the day he was traded to Colorado. Jean Beliveau's fine foundation, so many other ex Habs have done wonders in their communities. Outstanding.

Whether the timing of this is to get the captaincy or not, this is just amazing character. He should be captain. Learning French, giving back to the community, respectful, articulate, intelligent, a great interview ... He has won me over.

One thing about PK, he only knows one way of doing anything and that is BIG!
He is the full package. Hard to believe how lucky we are to have him on the Habs and how lucky Montreal is to have him as part of the community. Thankfully we all embraced him when he first adorned the Habs jersey. Those were special days and a real love in. May the mutual love continue!

Here's an exceptional piece on PK, written by Brian Wilde for CTV news. I'm reminded of a funeral, where everyone extolls the virtues of the deceased and how good a person they were. The beauty of PK is that we get to appreciate his actions in real time, as it's happening. He is indeed a special human being. Call of the Wilde: PK Subban is a Man in Full montreal.ctvnews.ca/call-of-the-wilde-pk-subban-is-a-man-in-full-1.2566534
The first time I truly got to know PK Subban beyond the clichés of the ice arena was just before the start of his second season. It was a Sunday at a car dealership in Laval on a warm morning in September. PK should not have been there as he had just finished a game on Saturday night at the Bell Centre. Sundays for hockey players in Montreal are for NFL football; for waking up late; for having a blast living the life of a young single man the night before; for anything but what he was doing. Subban was helping out a charity that was associated with a ‘green’ car to help the environment if anyone would care enough about the environment to sell enough of them to make a difference. Well, PK wanted to make a difference that day. So there he was at 9 a.m. already there an hour when I arrived late.
I saw they didn’t give Subban a script to work with, but just told him generally what to say. It felt like to me that a young hockey player was pretty much on his own trying to save the charity from its own lack of preparation. Not the perfect scenario. PK did take after take after take after take until I basically felt sorry for him that they kept telling him to do it again. I wanted to step in and say ‘come on surely that’s enough.’ Subban just kept smiling. He kept saying, “You need more, sure I can do more,” and he did more until he wore them out with his enthusiasm.
That morning, I learned that PK Subban wasn’t just a good hockey player; he was a man blooming towards greatness.
Through the years, the challenges in front of Subban mounted and the unfair criticism found footing. When the Philadelphia Flyers Mike Richards was starting the twilight of his career, he felt the need to suggest that Subban was uppity and that ‘he should know his place.’ PK Subban knows what this is code for. His parents had taught him well through the years that this isn’t about the topic at hand when you hear it. His parents know they could have had many fights, but it’s never worth it. Instead, they humbly chose a peaceful path. PK Subban has learned to step down; a sad indictment on society when it happens; but a strong and some might say even courageous statement from Subban that he will not be distracted, nor let his team be distracted from the more vital path toward hockey victories. Like every other difficult moment that Subban unfairly faces, like what Richards said, and the many more times that we don’t hear what’s said on the ice, he did what he always does…. he diffuses the situation.
When the Habs played the Boston Bruins in the playoffs a couple seasons ago, Subban responded the way he has always. When TD Garden fans spewed racist bile at him on Boston ice, he just played better. When racist rants were trending on Twitter to the point that they became an international story, he just played better. When he said about going back to Boston for game 7 ‘I can’t wait to go back in to that building and hear all that excitement from the fans and I can’t wait to take it all away from them,’ he played even better and did take that excitement away.
Here is how PK Subban acts for all of the hardest moments in his life: As Martin Luther King said, demand to be “judged not on the colour of your skin, but the content of your character.” The arc of Subban’s moral universe bends toward justice because he has earned it every single day.
That brings us to today: this glorious day; this day of the greatest single monetary donation by an athlete in Canadian history. Subban donated $10 million. Let that sink in. Ten million dollars. Find whatever stupid reason you can to disparage that, they all fall away as nonsensical. The one you hear the most is it’s a tax write off, but if it is as simple as this, then why aren’t all players doing this if it’s so darn beneficial to donate $10 million? The reason no one does it is it is not beneficial. It’s an enormous amount of money completely out of pocket for the good of society. If you are finding a way to not like PK Subban at this point, you need to look at your own character; what is flawed in you that you can’t like this man.
Subban didn’t just deliver $10 million today. He delivered a tear-jerking speech of love, responsibility to his community and commitment to a greater society. He spoke of what he wanted to give, and not what he wanted to get. He spoke of Montreal as his home and a desire to give back to our city. He spoke of following in the footsteps of the great and generous Jean Beliveau and he shared those words with Jean’s widow Elise. At that point, there were crying eyes in the house. There were standing ovations in the house. There was love in the house.
He also gave much of his speech in French. You see, the man only knows one way to do things - the man steps up. It seems harsh to make comparisons sometimes because it puts good and fine men in a negative light and that can be unfair to those men, but Brian Gionta never spoke a word of French as captain, Saku Koivu never broke through that French wall to receive more love than the love he already received and did deservedly so. Yet here we do make that comparison because PK Subban didn’t just say merci and move on, he delivered large portions of his speech in French and left the atrium speechless at his accent, his diction, and his effort.
PK takes French lessons two times a week. This takes time. The measure of love is not in saying you love, the measure of love is the time that you take toward the showing of love and the actions of love. Love is time and PK is taking it. Subban is learning how to communicate with the people of this city to show them his love and his appreciation for the life that they have given him. It’s a two-way street. He was born to play hockey and he is a master at it, but without the fans loving his shot, his spins, his passes and his skating, this day doesn’t exist. Montreal’s love of him is then in turn his love of Montreal. And I know it’s just hockey, but it’s beautiful and it’s glorious and it warms my heart.
We shy away from using the word hero to describe athletes now. They are all too human of course and they should be allowed to be human. No one should hold them to a higher standard as far as their character. They never promised you that. They shouldn’t promise you that. They are just good at sports. However, in Pernell Karl Subban, we have a hero. We have a man in full.
PK Subban is a hero today and we in the city who bask in the glow of his kindness and love are, beyond the goals and wins, truly blessed to bear witness.

Really have to agree with the character comments. PK has put himself out there in the most invasive market in the league and he has thrived. It puts a lie to the statement that great players don't want to be in Montreal. Sure, if your Patrick Kane and want to live in a big house with a tall fence around it and only come out at night to hang around bars - the media will be all over you.
But if you truly want to be part of the community the city will embrace you as if you are one of their own.

Great article by Wilde about a wonderful move by PK that will benefit so many in the community. To add to the class act, PK had his whole family there and his sister said the first few words.
Mr and Mrs Subban, you have done a wonderful job bringing up a classy young man.
To those buffoons out there on other sites that still spew negativity on this story...suck it folks, he is ours!!

MB & GM gave PK a big payday and PK gave one back to the city of Montreal and to the people of Quebec because I'm sure people from all over Quebec with seriously sick kids bring them to the Montreal Children's Hospital.
1st game at the Bell Centre will be even more electric when they announce PKs name.
Hey Mike Richards... what do you think about PK now?

The most negative thing I've heard (from a Leaf fan, of course) is that the media is making it sound as if PK wrote a $10 million cheque from his own pocket, while it's his foundation that will raise the money. There seems to be a change in the sentiment of PK's critics. A glacial change...but noticeable, nonetheless. They'll finally admit to "liking" him....but there'll usually be a "BUT".... The "BUT" I've reported deserves a give-your-head-a-shake response. 1. Um...who started the Foundation? And for what purpose? 2. Subban also personally donated $1 million at the very least.....AND will donate his name and brand for them to use for fundraising...which also means a TON of time and effort from him, donated of course. 3. The media is covering the story correctly. The Gazette clearly spelled it out in today's article., complete with the headline: : P.K. Subban's foundation pledges $10 million to Montreal Children's HospitalThe $10 million is a combination of a personal donation from Subban — in the seven-figure range — as well as funds from the P.K. Subban Foundation and fundraising activities using his name and brand over the next seven years.
Subban will also join the Children’s foundation’s board of directors and become its spokesperson.
The funds will mostly be used to help families who are facing tough financial times while taking care of their sick kids.
“My motive is to use these funds to provide for the family’s food, gas, possibly even pay their bills so they can focus on their son or daughter just getting better,” Subban said. “I feel privileged to be able to contribute to the transformation of the lives of sick kids and their families.”

Not that i have any respect for the haters, nor feel a need to enlightened their petty way of thinking BUT whether the money is coming form PK directly or HIS foundation it is nonetheless $10 million to a hospital. Perhaps these haters can name another athlete in Canada who has managed to accomplish such a feat using their skill, fame, and generosity. I sometimes ask myself how i would feel about PK if he played for the Bruins or the Leafs. I would hope I would be big enough to accept his talent and persona. May not come around to loving the guy but would certainly respect him and appreciate what he has done for the game and his community. Having said that, if I lived in TO and saw one of our own go to the rival city/team and be such a success I might be a little upset. But that hate should be directed at the Leafs management and not the player who has never shunned TO and in fact is still very much engaged in that city. These haters are very small minded people.

More to silence the critics from Leaf Nation. His Foundation exceeds Quebec's borders. Notably, his hometown….Toronto. From this past July 28th. Subban Surprises Youth Group in Toronto"I'm from Toronto, so whenever I can give back to communities here, I do," Subban said. "I know I play in Montreal and obviously I give back to Quebec and the city of Montreal a lot, but every now and then you have to remember this is my hometown. Even though I didn't grow up in Jane and Finch, I had a lot of friends and family members who lived in this area." Subban's sister Nastassia gathered the kids in a large meeting room and showed them a highlight video of her brother's career. Then she announced that P.K. was sorry he was unable to attend, but she had a video message from him.
Halfway through the video, P.K. entered the room, much to the delight of the kids who immediately began to cheer wildly and chant, "P.K.! P.K.! P.K.!"
Muskam Muhibullah, a 14-year-old who moved to Canada two years ago from Afghanistan, admitted she is not a hockey fan but was looking forward to meeting Subban.
"I did not know who he was, but now I do," Muhibullah said. "When they announced he was not [going to] be here today, I was a little disappointed. But here we go, he is here, and I am happy. It was a thrill to meet him."
Subban told the kids how proud he was of their accomplishment and commitment to the summer program, and then gave them gifts which, among other things, included a P.K. Subban T-shirt. Then the group gathered for a selfie with the hockey star.
Subban, who won the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman in 2013, said to be able to give the kids gifts and pat them on the back while hoping to give them a sense of direction at a critical time in their lives was uplifting. Subban, his mother, and two sisters (Natasha and Nastassia) were on hand and hope the P.K. Subban Foundation can accomplish much more in the future to help kids.===================================== Not to mention his work for Hyundai Hockey Helpers since at least 2012, which has provided grants to lower-income GTA families so the kids can play hockey.

I heard or read somewhere that after the 7 years, not only will he and his foundation donate the 10 million to the Montreal children's Hospital, but with his other charities added in after the 7 years, the true totals of all his charities will be around the 25 million mark.
The guy is just amazing, I agree with the others that said that we are witnessing something special.
