Gotta wonder if CTE was a factor...
Only 49 years old.
I updated the Steve Montador thread. Back in May, a research autopsy determined he definitely had CTE.

I have no idea if CTE is the cause, but symptoms tend to come out years later (Wiki) ... one of those symptoms is depression ... having said that, I honestly believe you can save someone's life just by saying "good morning" to them ... won't get into it, but you'd be surprised how much something like that (good morning, how are you) perks some people up ... don't know if this was the case with Todd ... it's too bad he's gone ... Cheers.

You had your thread up first, Dis. That's what prompted me to update the Montador story… These men and the tragedy surrounding them are forgotten all too quickly. You'd almost think the NHL prefers to sweep the issue under the carpet…and that the media are only too happy to oblige… Almost….

It was discussed on the TSN Insiders this week and they state that the league is developing a program for current players for 'life after hockey'. That's about as vague as a government plan. The only thing that is clear is the omission of players already retired. You know, the ones that really need it; the guys that played before we knew about CTE and the extent of damage done. They eluded to the fact that the PA is looking into it as well.
This isn't about life after hockey. It's not a manage your money seminar.

The first reported case of CTE affecting a hockey player is from 2009. Reggie Fleming, one of the toughest fighters of the 60s era, died at age 73 in 2009….and spent the last 30 or so years of his life on a downward slope of mental illness….characterized by manic-depressive disorder and dementia. Of course, drinking was also a problem. But what cued what? Chicken-egg….here we go. Autopsy revealed CTE. Important to note that, at present, CTE can be positively identified only post-mortem. Still, there likely is enough research now to see a causal link. In 2011, a second tough guy NHLer was identified to have had CTE. Bob Probert donated his brain for study…and bingo. Probert's history of substance-abuse was well-documented…and he died of heart failure at the age of 45. But was there a link to the diseased brain? Since then, Derek Boogaard and Steve Montador have joined the list. Rick Rypien and Wade Belak were not tested. As the FLEMING ARTICLE states, science had already known about CTE in boxers and football players. Easy math there. Head trauma is the name of the game in boxing....and it can hardly be avoided in football. While I understand that there will always be a risk of some sort of head trauma in hockey….it also stands to reason that deliberate, condoned, drafted-for pugilism is willful denial of the facts. I wonder if it could ever be proven that fighting in hockey is quite simply necessary and unavoidable. While it can be controlled/curtailed in short tournaments like the Olympics and World Jrs…..is it possible to do the same over a long NHL season?
