Sheesh ... the kid just turned 18 last month ... might have to ask a few of my friends in Owen Sound what they think of him ... he was only 17 when he was invited to the Rookie/Development Camp ... there's something to be said for that ...
Cheers.

I wasn't aware teams could do that. Perhaps it's because he's now 18.

But good signing..I think it was TheHockeyWriters draft list who had him as in their top 5 goalie in the 2015 draft.... Almost like a free draft choice....nice to have another minor leaguer to watch as we are kinda short in junior prospects

He was passed over in the draft ... this link explains a bit more ... "McNiven went undrafted this past June which came as somewhat of a surprise as several draft publications had him ranked worthy of a mid to late round selection. He signed an amateur tryout deal with the Canadiens to attend their development camp in July. McNiven had offers to go elsewhere after Montreal’s camp but after being told he had earned an invite to their September rookie tournament, he decided to decline those invitations."Cheers.

They can sign an undrafted, age eligible kid before the start of the junior season. After that, he goes back in the draft.
The contract will slide two years because of his age. The reports were good at development camp, and he had a great game in the rookie tourney.
Basically free goalie depth.

Yeah. I like it. Very low risk imo.

The Habs just returned him to Owen Sound, which is not surprising as he is only just 18 and they have hockey to play there. In addition, Owen Sound traded their other returnee goalie away, so McNiven is in the driver's seat to be their starter for now barring some other trade for a veteran.
He had a tale of two seasons last year, as he was lights out for the first half. It appears he lost his confidence after getting lit up at the CHL Top Prospects Game. Not surprising as many young goalies struggle for consistency and development takes a little while.
When you think the Habs have added extra goalie depth through astute free agent signings (Condon, McNiven) and a smart goalie swap (Tokarski), the organizational depth looks much better than it did not that long ago. The ex-top goalie of the year from the USHL (Hawkey) starts his NCAA career this fall too, after an injury cut his season very short last year.
