After a surprise first season, where everything seemed to go right and the Avs were playing exciting hockey, they came back to Earth last year. They went from 52-22-8 in 13-14 to 39-31-12 in 14-15. Playoffs to no playoffs. 12OTLs is a lot. This year, they're sub .500.
Is it simply a lack of talent? The first line of MacKinnon-Landeskog-Iginla is doing well. It drops off a lot after that. Grigorenko looks like a bust. Varlamov has been horrible.
How long is his leash?

Goaltending can, and will, kill you if it's not up to par. Patrick should go back in net himself. Couldn't be any worse.
Varlamov was outstanding in Roy's first year, and has simply been mediocre or worse since then.

Varlamov was outstanding in Roy's first year, and has simply been mediocre or worse since then. Plus his cap hit is around 6 million. I was wondering about the availability of Matt Duchene. He can be a dynamic player and over the course of his career he averages out to about 60 points per season. But then I see that his cap hit is also 6 million.
