Wed, March 30, 2005 Bulldogs have bite at homeMoose have plenty of trouble winning in HamiltonBy KEN WIEBE, STAFF REPORTER HAMILTON -- A trip to the Dog Pound has rarely been an enjoyable experience for the Manitoba Moose. With a 4-14-1 lifetime record at Copps Coliseum, it takes some digging to find positives, but the Moose make the final visit of the regular season to Copps Coliseum tonight to open a three-game road trip that also includes stops in Syracuse, N.Y., on Friday and Binghamton, N.Y., on Saturday. With just 11 games left until the American Hockey League's Calder Cup playoffs, the Moose are attempting to hold off the St. John's Maple Leafs to secure second spot in the North Division. Currently, the Moose lead the Maple Leafs by four points and hold a game in hand. The Bulldogs, who are the primary affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens and also house a few Dallas Stars prospects, are in a four-way battle for the fourth and final spot in the North. They hold a two-point edge over the Syracuse Crunch and a four-point bulge over the Cleveland Barons and Edmonton Road Runners, who have lost four straight and have only won once during the past 10 games (1-7-1-2). "We know they're a trapping team and they've been playing really well since they got (Steve) Begin and (Mike) Komisarek," said Moose centre Peter Sarno, referring to the two Canadiens the Bulldogs added to the lineup after healing from injuries suffered last season in Montreal. "They've picked up their game. They're a contender, they're battling for a playoff spot, and we know they're going to come out hard. We're not secure in second spot yet, and we want that home ice advantage." - www.canoe.ca/NewsStand/WinnipegSun/Sports/2005/03/30/976350-sun.html

The score is 1-1 at the end of one period of play.
Begin scored for the Dogs & Ward got the only assist on the goal.

Huge win for the Dogs over the Bullwinkles. This was the first of a number of tough games against good opponents over the final 10 game stretch for the Doggies. That stretch also includes two head to head against the Crunch. The good news is that 7 of those ten (and six after tonight) are in the Dog Pound.
This game was televised and I hope most had the chance to watch. It was well played by the Dogs and that 5-3 penalty kill at the end of the first really was a huge boost to the Dogs going into the second. That Kosty-Begin-Ward line is really playing well and nicely complementing Higgins-Pleky-Miettinen. Jarvis seems to have found his combos and is doing a lot less juggling than before. It will be interesting where he inserts Steve Ott when he returns from injury, but I would think likely on the third line with Morgan and one of Milroy and Ferland.
The PP seemed really flat tonight and didn't have any real sustained pressure, but other than that, a well played and deserved win.

So of course after I bad-mouth them, Ivanans scores, assisted by Locke, and Ferland plays probably the best game I have seen him play.
Sigh.

...AK's strenght really surprised me. That guy seems really hard to handle for his size. On the other hand, he might possess a terrific shot but if he never uses it, his game becomes quite ordinary... He's got to shoot more, more and more.
Hainsey reminds so much of Brisebois... With all the good and ...the bads...
Higgins was the most impressive forward not on the Begin line... A lot of moves and offense smarts in him... JP Côté seems to be this year's version of Beauchemin. Really effective dmen.

Maybe Jarvis has coached them better than we thought? They lost a lot of one goal games earlier in the season. And it's not like the team has an abundance of scorers. They have to play well defensively, and that's good for players like Kostitsyn and Plekanec if they want to make the NHL....

Excerpted from a post from another board:
On RDS Andre Savard was interviewed and he said they tried to get Perrezhogin back for the playoffs thinking it was a season suspension, but the season includes the playoffs...as for an update from Russia,he said like last year Perrezhogin has improved,Savard said he was dominant at the AHL level in the second half/playoffs so you can imagine at what level he's at if he's improved...NHL ready...Savard declared him our #1 prospect...
Any confirmations from HabsRus members?

I saw the interview in question and Savard did indeed proclaim Perezhogin the Habs top prospect.
