A Guy like MeWhat a great story about himself and how self serving the NHL is.

he is not an all star. he admits it.
but the funny thing is . . . the NHL could have used this big time to say "any one can be an all star" . . . pumped him up . . . made a big deal out of it . . . but nope, they have to show themselves to be the twits that they are.
I don't watch the games. nor the skills competitions. nothing about the weekend is appealing. but Scott . . . that would have drawn me in.
is he a whiner? mmmmaybe. should have have said "no thanks" and turned down the money and the 15 minutes of fame? would you? I wouldn't. I'd go out there and do all I could . . . and have a blast (with Tarasenko whizzing by over one shoulder, and Toews putting the moves on me over the other). because next year I'll probably be sitting in an office somewhere. but I'll always have that memory.

I read that last night and I thought it was a pretty good read ... the only thing the John Scott scenario proved to me, anyway, is just how dysfunctional a process the all-star voting has become ... I can see some fans making a joke of it by hitting their speed-dail for a few hours just to run up the tally ... however, there are fans out there who feel the same way I do and were probably trying to make that point ... I was going to put up an all-star thread, but I'm not sure just how many people want to see it ... some folks really like the all-star hype and there are others who don't ... to each their own ...
Cheers.

I could tolerate it if they even tried a little bit. Skate 90%, don't hit anyone, backcheck a little. Try to win as much as we do on road hockey games. We're having fun but trying to win. They don't do any of that. Hard to enjoy a casual practice.

Next year we should vote in Brendan Gallagher. That should turn up the effort level.

That's a hell of an idea, frozone. I can't see Gally taking a night off, even in the ASG.

NHL Pressured Scott to Sit-Out ASG The NHL creates the situation, then tries to shame Scott out of it. The first time he agreed with them….the second time shows just how low the NHL is willing to go. Whoever in the league office (and Scott obviously knows who was talking to him) asked him if playing in the ASG would be something his kids would be proud of, should be fired. As if that's likely to happen. ==================================================================================================================== NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- John Scott, the career journeyman enforcer who was surprisingly voted into the NHL All-Star Game by fans, said he got a call from someone at the league who tried to talk him out of playing in the showcase event this Sunday.
According to Scott, someone with the NHL asked him: "Do you think this is something your kids would be proud of?"
Scott, who has two daughters, described the incident in a first-person account posted Thursday by The Players Tribune. He said that moment strengthened his resolve to play in the 3-on-3 format with some of the best hockey players in the world.
"Because, while I may not deserve to be an NHL All-Star, I know I deserve to be the judge of what my kids will -- and won't -- be proud of me for," wrote Scott, 33.
Messages seeking comment on Scott's assertions were left with NHL officials.
Scott's essay is the latest twist in an odd story that has put the league in an awkward situation. Like other professional leagues, the NHL uses its All-Star Game to showcase its top players, and Scott, by his own admission, is not among that group.
A sparingly used player, he has scored just five goals since his NHL debut in 2009. He played for the Arizona Coyotes when he was named an All-Star, but was later stunned by a trade to Montreal, which sent him to its AHL affiliate in Newfoundland.
Scott wrote that he wasn't in "a real hockey fight" until he was 23. He embraced dropping his gloves during his third year in the AHL after finding out he was good at fighting and that it fired up his teammates.
"I stuck around," Scott wrote. "My wife and I had to move all across the country, year after year. But I stayed in the NHL, by any means necessary. It is not easy."
Scott has played for Minnesota, Chicago, the New York Rangers, Buffalo, San Jose and Arizona. He played in a career-high 56 games with the Sabres two years ago and scored a career-high three goals last season with the Sharks. Scott hasn't averaged double digits in ice time during an NHL season.
At first, Scott wrote, he accepted the league's position that he didn't belong in the All-Star game.
"They didn't mince words -- This is not a game for you, John -- but I understood all the same," Scott wrote. "Honestly, on some level, I agreed. In the beginning, at least, I just wanted the entire thing to go away.
"So when they asked me to make a statement -- nudging the fan vote in another direction and denouncing the John Scott 'movement' -- I did it without hesitation," he added. "I told the fans, 'Listen. I don't deserve this. Vote for my teammates.' And I was telling the truth. But while I don't deserve to be an All-Star, I also don't think I deserve to be treated like I've been by the league throughout this saga. I'm an NHL player -- and, whatever my set of skills may be, that I'm an NHL player is no accident."

I also felt bad for him last night when he was in a generic NHL logo jersey.
And Bergevin played a part in that.
I certainly hope that wasn't part of the NHL's "plan"….

I'm not very happy with MB about his role in all this. .. he talks about character but how much character is there in participating in screwing over a minimum wage player... a guy who did nothing to deserve what happened to him. Was MB so afraid of not being able to trade Tinordi that he accepted a part in this?

Scott with 2 goals in his first game. Duschene definitely let him go on the breakaway, but the 1st goal was legit.
For pure ASG entertainment, the 3-on-3 is a lot better than the 5-on-5.

Scott's team wins the million with a 1-0 win...and he's awarded the MVP. Happy for him. Amidst this circus, for which didn't ask, he conducted himself with humour and class.
Included in the circus was the NHL shaming/bullying him....because THEIR system caused it. Go figure....
Bettman denied (after being asked by Strombo) that somebody from the NHL called him re: "Do you think this is something your kids would be proud of?"
Whatever.....

Bettman told Strombo that he wasn't sure if the Scott situation was a result of the fans targeting the ASG format, the NHL, or Scott in particular. Duh....the NHL invited such a result with their fan voting system. In the age of social media....
Bettman also said as soon as Scott decided to play in the game, the NHL was fine with it.
Right...as if the conversation went something like:
Hey, John.....do you want to play in the game?
--Yes, I do.
Great! See you in Nashville.
We know it was dirty, Gary.
John Scott has a different side:
While I don't deserve to be an All-Star, I also don't think I deserve to be treated like I've been by the league throughout this saga.
Still perplexed as to Montreal's involvement in this....
I suspect the truth will come out at some point.

I suspect the truth will come out at some point. It's a big conspiracy to land the #1 pick this year. Berg takes Scott and gets hit with the splatter of the egg that hit the face of the NHL. In return, Berg is promised the #1 pick for tanking the season. Heard it here first.

There's going to be a movie made about John Scott. It's been a weird, inspiring, incredible and whacky story for a guy who was a member of a dying breed, the protector. a) Sports league has an embarrassing All Star Game spectacle, which has become a laughing stock b) A group of fans band to further embarrass the League and its commissioner by fan voting in one of the least skilled players (white hat) in the league who has a young wife, two children and twins on the way (Seriously?!, who's thinking up this story?) c) This player ends up with more votes than anyone d) The league (black hats) initiates a nefarious campaign to impugn the White Hat and coerce him into turning down the all star invitation e) The White Hat (WH) bravely faces down the opposition and chooses to attend f) In a Machiavellan move, the league has the player traded to another team, who sends him to the minors, further damaging his chances of attending the all-star game g) Fans revolt, WH attends all star game as captain of his former all star division. h) All remaining players take the very classy route of including WH in all aspects of the All Star Spectacle, showing their true class. i) WH scores two goals in mini-tournament and leads his Division to the Championship and a $1MM prize for his winning team. j) WH takes home MVP of the tournament and wins a new car for his wife k) The league, despite all its efforts, experiences it's best All Star game in years l) WH, previously a non-entity in the league becomes an icon, a role model, a Champion of underdogs the world over and an all-star in every sense of the word
M) in a sequel, WH leads his dysfunctional League team to the championship in one of the greatest turn-arounds in league history, despite being constantly benched by his coach, and being shuffled back and forth between the bigs and the farm team.
Like I said, you can't make up this stuff. If you did, no one would believe you.

Not that I do this so I can't even confirm this, but TSN 690 just mentioned that the Ice Caps changed their twitter handle to JohnScottIceCaps. That's great. Take advantage of the fallout for some free publicity.
The NHL and Habs should look to cash in also. Who's t-shirt sold out first at the ASG. Scott's. The Habs should call him up for one game. Maybe against Arizona. (There's an ending for the movie.) Sell some jerseys. Come on Molson. You can always use more money.
And here's a lesson to Bettman and Co. The fans like the all-star voting as is. So don't change it. The NHL got more coverage than their marketing team could dream of for this. So next year, they vote in Steve Ott or Adam McQuaid or Benoit Pouliot or whoever. Let the fans chose someone, for whatever reason they want him there. It's suppose to be for fun.

I don't mind one guy getting in that fans can get behind a la Scott or Fitzpatrick per all-star team but not a whole team built of scrubs. Plus they could also add in one Alumini per all-star team.

Yeah not an entire team of John Scotts and the likes. But yeah, an underdog per team. And I like the alumni per team also. This is not a serious game, it's a celebration. Celebrate the game with the former stars also. At the winter classic, I was just as excited to see the alumni game as the real game. Seeing Naslund on the ice for the first since he retired was great. I'm sure Nashville fans would have loved to see a Cliff Ronning or somebody from the past in uniform again for one last hurrah.

The man spun it to his favor and not much else. He could of easily walked away from what was nothing more then a prank. There are lifer AHL'ers that are twice as good as him.
