#Sens get Phaneuf, Frattin, Bailey, Rupert and Donaghey in exchange for Cowen, Greening, Michalek, Lindberg and 2nd-rounder in 2017.

Whenever I watched Ottawa lately I had the impression that Cowen was out of favor & seen as a disappointment. Don't know how he will fare in Toronto. Sens get a guy who clearly is not the go to guy on D. I think he will be OK in that role & along with Methot (I think he's back) will add some physical play. Pros for both teams IMO. EDIT: Have to go for a while. At work & people keep interrupting.

There may be a bit of a message for Bergevin…
Bargain deals aren't the only ones that can be made…even within Divisions…between traditional rivals…

There may be a bit of a message for Bergevin… Bargain deals aren't the only ones that can be made…even within Divisions…between traditional rivals… To play Devil's Advocate, our only comparable might be Plekanec. The rest are guys we'd ideally like to sell off for immediate cap relief. There's nothing to say the Leafs can't move Cowen or Greening before the deadline, but their salaries and Michalek's add up to more than Phaneufs and all are signed through next year.

The Leafs managed to shed themselves of Kessel, Clarkson, and now Phaneuf.
Are they eating any of Kessel's and/or Clarkson's contracts?>

Motivation and incentive for trading differ from deal to deal. It's finding a dancing partner that most-closely meets mutual needs. I'm just saying that Bergevin's PlayStation-type excuses are wearing thin.

I think this tweet sums up what the Habs need to take from all this. If the Leafs can move those pieces and retain very little ...

First thing I thought of when I heard of the trade ... freeing up the cap space for Stamkos ... Ottawa just got better, though ... Dion Phaneuf might come with a big cap hit, but he was Toronto's best defenseman (IMO) ... Cheers.

Bryan Murray on radio now. The deal really started coming together--talking in earnest--on Saturday.
In response to, "Were you at all reluctant to trade with a division rival?"
I'm never hesistant when it comes to making a good deal. We've dealt with Tampa, Buffalo…and now Toronto...

End of an era in Toronto. He was the last of the Big 4 wasn't he. Kaberle, Beauchemin, Komisarek and Phaneuf.

Bryan Murray says he needed a defenseman to play with Methot and a Left Winger. So he trades two left wingers and acquires a right winger. Murray must see something in Phaneuf , cause this is a huge Leafs win. A young talented prospect, Cowan, and the second rounder.

He'll likely slide in where he belongs…on the second pairing….no longer the captain, on top of that outrageous contract. The Leafs are no doubt OVERJOYED, though….ha!

Cowen , I don't think, has ever lived up to being a 9th over all pick and the pick & prospect are just unknowns at this point. I'd say the leafs are happy just to get rid of another of Nonis's onerous contracts.

Didn't start talking seriously on a deal this size until 3-4 days ago? And we're told it took weeks to trade Tinordi for Bartley. To be fair it was never said that the Montreal end of that three-way took weeks to consummate. In fact, Pierre Lebrun said that Bergevin had received zero offers for Tinordi up until five days before he traded him. So he really only took five days to trade Tinordi.
