Bob Boughner was picked up by the avs for a 3rd round pic and a no name prospect... Not that Boughner, Zhamnov or Bondra are the type of players we need long term, but I'd like to see gainey get in there and make a move to make us better.
I hate being in limbo... not ready to pick up rental players for a serious run, not bad enough to warrant a full overhaul. If our prospects are indeed good enough to take us on a Cup run in two or three years, shouldn't we start aquiring some solid veterans to surround them with? (sorry, but quintal, perrault, dackell, and juneau don't quite cut it!)

Solid vets, I think, will not come now when even marginal players are going at more than fair value; but the right ones will be brought in for the right price when the time is right.
Look, Boss, the plan, the plan

Gainey has had to put considerable money into players who are NOT playing for the Habs, such as Czerkawski, McKay, and Audette, rather than into players who SHOULD be playing for them.

When will the time be right, next season? If the marginal players are overpriced now, won't the price for everyone go up as the trade deadline approaches? If so, Gainey might not be able to trade at all.

If so, Gainey might not be able to trade at all. Is the purpose of trading to become maginally better so we can indeed make it into the playoffs, somewhat better so that we win a round in the playoffs, or dramatically better so that we win the Cup? A Cup win seems far beyond the realm of possibility, as we need far too much this year. If we are going to improve via trade route this year (a start for the future) then marginal trades will not cut it. Therefore, we may need to be willing to pay a lot to improve a bit. That being said, rihgt now there are teams close enough to the playoffs to hold off for a bit longer before making a trade (hoping for that 2-game cash infusion). Come a week and a half from now GMs may be in more of a trading mood, and it could go two ways: a bidding war (count on the Devils, the Leafs, and the Flyers being involved somehow) or a player glut, which would force prices down (not likely). When will the time be right? When BG says so. [insert picture of a waffle here]. Actually, I'm not so concerned about the time being right nor the price being right. I'm waiting for the trade that gets the player right. Who is that? No idea, but I'll know him when I see him (Smith).
