The Hamilton Bulldogs announced today the winners of the hockey club's 2004-05 individual player awards.
Hamilton Bulldogs second-year forward Chris Higgins was the recipient of 'The Hamilton Spectator Most Valuable Player Award' as voted by his teammates. Higgins, a 21-year-old native of Smithtown, New York, has played in 74 games for the Bulldogs this season has been among Hamilton's top offensive players. The 5'11, 188-pound Higgins is currently tied for first in goals (27), second in game-winning goals (5), third in points (49), and third in power-play goals (8). Higgins also leads the Bulldogs in shorthanded goals with four on the season. The Bulldogs have a record of (26-7-2-1) when Higgins registers at least a point.
Dan Jancevski a 23-year-old native of Windsor, Ontario, is the winner of 'The Tim Horton's Top Defenceman Award' as selected by the local media. Through 78 games played, Jancevski has equalled a career high in goals with five, and has set new personal bests in assists (20) and points (25). The 6'3, 212-pound defenceman is currently the AHL's Iron Man, having played in 210 consecutive games. Jancevski, along with teammate Tomas Plekanec, will look to become the third and fourth players in team history, respectively, to play in all 80 Bulldogs regular season games.
Rookie forward Corey Locke was awarded 'The Hamilton Bulldogs Fans Choice Award' , as voted by the Hamilton Bulldogs Booster Club. The 20-year-old native of Newmarket, Ontario has enjoyed success in his first season in Hamilton, and currently stands seventh in AHL rookie scoring with 43 points on 16 goals and 27 assists in 76 games played. The 5'9, 170-pound centre participated in numerous community appearances, including many Booster Club events.
For the second consecutive season, Duncan Milroy has been given 'The H.E.C.F.I. Community Leadership Award' for his work within the Hamilton area and community, as voted by the Hamilton Bulldogs front office. The 23-year-old native of Edmonton, Alberta has gave countless hours of his time to many Bulldogs community initiatives this season including: 'Healthy HABits' - a Bulldogs fundraising program that promotes healthy and active lifestyles, 'Raise A Reader' program - donated $1,000 to the Sanford School Nourishment program, Honourary Chairman for the 'TD Smiles On Ice Game', Participated in 'I Love Hamilton Campaign', and was an Honourary Waiter at 'The Children's Aid Society of Hamilton Spaghetti Dinner'. Milroy, a 6'1, 198 pound right-winger, has played in 74 games for the Bulldogs this season and has earned 15 goals and 18 assists for 33 points.
Yann Danis has been named the first ever recipient of 'The Swiss Chalet Rookie of the Year Award' , as voted on by the Hamilton Bulldogs Radio Broadcast Team. Danis, a 6,0, 190-pound goaltender from St. Jerome, Quebec has produced impressive numbers in his first season with the Bulldogs. In 52 games played, the 23-year-old Danis has earned a record of 27W-17L-6SOL, a .924 save percentage, a 2.33 goals against average, and five shutouts. Danis' 27 wins is a Bulldogs team record, and his five shutouts in a season, ties an all-time franchise high.
For the first time in Bulldogs franchise history, an award will be given to the club's top scorer. Tomas Plekanec is the winner of the Hamilton Bulldogs Top Scorer Award this season. Plekanec, a 5'10, 189-pound forward from Kladno, Czech Republic, will become the Bulldogs leading scorer for the second consecutive season. Plekanec leads the Bulldogs in many offensive categories this season including: assists (33), points (60), power-play goals (10), and game-winning goals (7). The 23-year-old centre is also tied with Chris Higgins for most Bulldogs goals (27). Plekanec was the Bulldogs lone representative at the 2005 AHL All-Star Classic, winning the CCM Fastest Skater Competition and was named the All-Star Game's Most Valuable Player.
The Molson Cup and The Part Source Hometown Hero Awards will be announced at the conclusion of the regular season. The current leaders for 'The Molson Cup', as voted on by the media at each game, are goaltender Yann Danis (62 points) and forward Chris Higgins (57 points). And 'The Part Source Hometown Hero' leaders, as voted by the media at each home game for Hardest Working Player are forwards Steve Ott (70 points), Chris Higgins (60 points), and Tomas Plekanec (50 points).
