Hey don't Talon and Rowe know that you can't make hockey trades?

Both fan bases are up in arms on hf lol. Consensus on the main board is this:
1. McCann for Gudbranson, straight up, would be fair value. 2. With the Panthers depth down the middle where does McCann fit? 3. The Canucks got fleeced on the picks, giving up the 33rd overall and getting the lesser of the other two picks, and it will be almost 2 rounds apart.

Yeah, I think Vancouver paid a bit more than they should have, but Benning is under real pressure to improve that back line of the Canucks. Edler and Tanev are a decent first pairing, but there's not much for the second. Hutton (with the World Team Canada) is a reasonable 2nd pairing guy, but they really needed a beast and Gudbrandson is certainly a beast. Is he very good at moving the puck? Dunno, but I guess he can always give it to Hutton. I like Gudbrandson, though. (Still haven't figured out the spelling of his name...have seen it a couple of different ways). Remember when he tossed Ryan White around like a rag doll? On the flip side, McCann showed some flashes of really high end skill this past year. Interspersed around some not so great play too, but what do you expect from a 19 year old? He would have been the natural successor to Henrik Sedin...a top scoring centre for the first line in due course if he pans out. Canucks also have Sutter and Horvat but both are more two way players rather than pure scorers. Like Plekanec except better in the playoffs.
So the trade is a bit of a toss-up for me. If the draft really does fall off after #'s 15 or 20 or whatever the scouts are saying, maybe it's not that high a cost for the Canucks. If McCann does become a #1 centre (tough in Florida where the centre spots are pretty loaded - is there another trade coming?) then the trade won't look pretty for Benning. From a Canuck standpoint, Benning was saddled with an older team that was on the downslope, so he's trying to make adjustments on the fly and still remain competitive (we know what that's like and still question the strategy), so it's been a challenge for him. I wouldn't ridicule him yet

My take is that I'm glad I'm not a Canucks fan. I feel that they paid a steep price for at best a #4 d-man. I would have better understood the trade if Vancouver was a contending team, but they're closer to being a rebuilding team. They should be acquiring prospects and picks instead of throwing them into trades.
Florida gets a young center that has shown potential already in the NHL, and pick up better draft picks. I don't know how any Panther fans could be upset.
