Just shortly after penning a graduating NCAA star to a contract, Malcolm Cameron and the Long Beach Ice Dogs signed the QMJHL's 2004-05 penalty leader. Wenzel comes with a good endorsement from Clem Jodoin, the ex-Hab connection, and it might not be all that coincidental that Long Beach may well be the final destination this season for Habs' 2003 goalie prospect Jaroslav Halak, who also finished his junior career with Lewiston MAINEiacs. If the Habs also send Jimmy Bonneau to Long Beach (who has to be signed by July 30th or reenter the draft), that will be quite a one-two punch. I really like this trend. The Habs' ECHL affiliate is loading up with ex-junior and ex-NCAA talent. It was Steeve Villeneuve and Marco Rosa last season, and they have already penned Villeneuve (who was a tryout at a Habs rookie camp two years ago), Foster and now Wenzel for this season. Just adds depth within the organization, and who knows, some of these guys could work their way up to the Ham Dogs some day. www.icedogs.com/fullstory.php?id=236
