Who will make the jump to Montreal?
Wednesday July 20, 2005
(RDS) - The Canadiens next training camp will be extremely interesting for both the prospects and their fans. Five players who spent the season in Hamilton last year could make the big jump.
Right off the top let's talk about a player who is assured of beginning the season in Montreal, unless he's traded: 24-year-old defenseman Ron Hainsey. He experienced a difficult start to the season with the Bulldogs last year, but according to Doug Jarvis, his coach in Hamilton, he finished well.
"Ron was one of our best players near the end of the season. He came alive with the arrival of Mike Komisarek", indicates Doug Jarvis.
Another player who will get a good look is Chris Higgins, who notched 28 goals and picked up 23 assists in 76 matches last season. Excellent defensively, he finally succeeded in finding the mark offensively.
"Chris scored goals in bunches. He will be more consistent in a few years. He's a player with a lot of talent", adds Jarvis.
Among the other players who could surprise, there is Tomas Plekanec, who finished as the Bulldogs' leading scorer with 29 goals and 35 assists. At 5 feet 11 inches, he will have to grab attention at camp to make Claude Julien's lineup.
"He's a top-level prospect in the organization. Tomas is a very competitive player. He had a role as a leader last season. He is offensively talented and is a terrific skater."
Other players to keep an eye on, but who should still play in the AHL, are Andrei Kostitsyn, who is highly valued by Habs management. Corey Locke is also well regarded, as is goalie Yann Danis. Due to lack of room in Montreal they will have to be patient before they get the call.
