That's the Habs trading radar. And also your trade rumors update for this week-end.
It started strong in December when Gainey said he was done evaluating this team and that changes were needed. He went as far as to say he wanted a RH C and that trade talks were heating up before X-mas and would resume after the holidays.
More recently, we heard rumors about Gauthier, Smyth, O'Neil, Witt and Koslov.
I can tell you that for the last 2 days, there is nothing out there. No bip. Try google news and type 'Gainey' and will find the story of Andre Gainey who was arrested for watching porn while driving. A first in the state of New York.
Gainey has made himself invisible. No comments and obviously no leaks regarding trades.
Calm before the storm?

It's hard to tell. Because nothing is happening does it mean BG is doing nothing?
Most of Andre Savard's trades came in under the radar - no rumors before the deals at all. I have a feeling that BG has deals in progress but is being asked to fork over some of the prospects - something I'm sure he is very reluctant to do.
Quinn came out publicly last night and stated very clearly that Toronto was not going to trade any of their young talent. Maybe Gainey has told other GM's the same thing privately.

For some people around here, it seems like if a trade is not made they will go insane.
Despite the recent struggles, the injuries, and Buffalo gaining ground, I am still not convinced Gainey will make a trade.

Despite the recent struggles, the injuries, and Buffalo gaining ground, I am still not convinced Gainey will make a trade. Hmmm, no, but I think most people feel they will go insane if the Habs miss the playoffs again despite a 12 points lead 2 weeks ago. The real question is (and RDS is asking it today): Do you believe the current group of players is good enough to qualify for the playoffs? So far, 40% said yes. You have to admit, they look bad right now. They look bad because we are playing stronger opponents (at this time of the year, they all are, except the Pens) and it will not get any better. We have the toughest schedule among the teams battling for the last playoff spot. So you really think they have the resources to make it without outside help?

Repeat after me: "There will be no trade made of consequence." And I think you all know why. Any trade to attain a player (s) of significance will require us giving something of quality in return, and that means someone in Hamilton. The teams that are out of the Playoff hunt are looking for the future, i.e. they don't want a Perreault or a Juneau etc., they're eyeing what's in Hamilton. Not going to happen.

The Habs haven't been eliminated just yet, thank you. The Sabres were stalled by the Islanders (I didn't think I'd be grateful for that) and have a 3-point lead. Souray should be back before the end of the regular season. I wouldn't trade for anyone I didn't think could still be around in 3 years. I would be horrified at the thought of Gainey's repeating Clarke's move to obtain Adam Oates, for example. I don't think Gainey would make that kind of mistake.

The Habs have alot of talent they can trade and it won't leave the cupboard bare or put them in peril.Gainey's not going to make a deal that is short-sited he's not that stupid.Any deal will involve players that can help down the road you can guarantee that. Look to me its its simple if the Habs want to really solidify a playoffs spot and give themselves a fighting chance at an upset they have to make a deal. The top teams are strong but there is questions with injuries.A tweak here or there and a hot Theo could surprise . They can still make the playoffs without a deal but IMO when you're in a postion to make the playoffs you should try and improve yourself the best you can.Being content at just making doesn't suit me or the history of the team. It 's beens a year of evaluation surely but just because they over achieved or surprised any of us doesn't mean they should be happy just to settle for mediocraty. I still think the Habs should have made a deal months ago but since they've missed that boat I think they should still be looking to get better. I won't go insane but as a fan I can still be disappointed. The next cinderella team could just be that deal thats not made away. HFTO

I don't expect anything of consequence to happen.
Let's keep in mind that Gainey in Dallas had a policy of not trading kids until he was either trading a known commodity (ie, a developped player) or until he'd given up on them.
I think with BG at the helm people will get frustrated over time about the lack of interesting moves more than anything else.

Well
If he doesn't make a move and we miss the playoffs then I'll be upset
If he makes a move and we miss the playoffs I will be upset.
If we make the playoffs I am happy ..... so the moral is .... I don't care what Gainey does as long as we make the playoffs.
As for not selling the future for geting a player that could help us. We I am sure if he does trade then the other team won't be asking for Balej, Plecanec, Hainsey, Komisarek, Hossa, Kastisyn, and Locke (btw not all these guys are going to be blue-chip NHLers either). And I am sure Gainsey won't trade them all. Only one of them. So our future is still okay no matter what Gainey does.

Oh that's might risky talk from Quinn. Like me saying, "I'm not going to give away any of my millions to charity. CO's millions maybe, but not mine." You can't give away what you don't have. Next thing he'll be saying is that he has a secret diet recipe.

The teams that are out of the Playoff hunt are looking for the future, i.e. they don't want a Perreault or a Juneau etc., they're eyeing what's in Hamilton. Not going to happen. Why are all the players in Hamilton untouchable? If the players in Hamilton that are being traded are used to acquire other useful assets, why should they not be moved? It seems that I'm the only one who still thinks that Gainey will make a significant deal this year. Sure we have quality prospects in Hamilton, but if they can be used to acquire a player who is in his mid-to-late 20s, that can help the team now and for the next 4-5 years, then I think that Gainey should pull the trigger. This would not be classified as a panic move, but a move that can help the team now and in the future. I think that this team needs a serious makeover. If Gainey-esque teams are similar to the 1999 Dallas Stars, then the current edition of the Habs have a long way to go. Now I know that this transformation cannot happen overnight. It will be a slow and gradual process and it needs to start somewhere. So why not make the necessary steps to start it this year?

It was Gainey (I'm fairly sure) who traded Iginla for Nieuwendyk. Similar situation to what is being called for by some. Trading unproven potential for proven ability, albeit older. Nieuwendyk was 29 at the time. too much difference in age for my liking, but the Stars did win a cup with him.

Here's a dream for ya:
Let's say Gainey goes big and gets Witt and Lang...Suprises everyone!
Lang heats it up with Koivu and Ryder, wins the Art Ross and Rocket Richard. (last to do it: Guy Lafleur)
Ryder scores a bunch with his new linemate and wins the Calder. (last winner Ken Dryden)
Theodore with his new found offense in front of him and a bruiser Dman gets rejuvenated and wins a bunch of games and gets 5 shutouts and wins the Vezina.... (Last Winner: THEO!)
Plus we make the playoffs and we win the cup...(#25)
This would be an awesome season!
bip bip bip.......oh there's my alarm clock...time to wake up.

Stating the obvious, the looming players strike is having a lot to do with the deals that are made this year.
But to comment on something earlier
The biggest things we are missing from the 1999 Stars are Modano,Hull, and Neiwendyk. This ties into a thread I started asking if we had a #1 line. I would take those 3 in a hearbeat over our top 3 forwards.

A lot of impending free agents go at the deadline for draft picks.
I see Gainey picking up a couple of useful role players for the stretch.

Next thing he'll be saying is that he has a secret diet recipe. I assume he's talking about Carlo C., Stajan, Antropov, Ponikoroski . If you can believe the TO media everybody wants Carlo. ANd I think he is right if his team is going to have any future. If the Caps are looking for younger players & picks for Gonchar & Quinn says he won't deal them, is there really ongoing talks between the 2 teams or just media hype?

I wonder how Quinn can come out and confidently say that the Leafs won't trade any youngsters. You would think that ultimately, that decision is up to Fergie jr. Somehow, Quinn must still think he's the GM.

Somehow, Quinn must still think he's the GM. I was surprised to hear it too. I'm sure he is still calling the shots with a rookie GM that he helped hire. Or maybe it is something previously discussed. They did it last year with the Nolan trade and it did them no good at all. Personally I think they are nuts to trade their best prospect and young player off their roster for Gonchar. He would add offence but the leafs already get enough points from their blueline. Belfour's injury has really highlighted their defensive shortcomings. They should be looking for a solid guy, not the high profile pick up. PS - Sorry, didn't mean to turn this into a leafs discussion.

Let's say McPhee asks for Balej, Hainsey, Hossa, a 3rd rounder and a conditional pick if we resign Witt. Would you make the deal? To me the only untouchable should be Ribeiro, Ryder and Komisarek. (We are grooming these guys the right way ... in the NHL finally) I would do the deal in a heart beat, but maybe that why I am not GM. Lang is only 5 Million a season. Witt is a reliable defenseman with a "crousty" side. Which is what we need. We lose three unknown quantities that can immediatley step in and play for the Capitals. But we still have Kastisyn, Locke, Komisarek, Ryder, Ribeiro, Plecanec. So our future isn't hurt in any way. And there is no team in the NHL (besides NJ) that thinks 5 years ahead now anyway. If they have the chance they try to win it here and now. If we win the Stanley Cup this year or next, do you think we will care if Hossa is a 30 goal man in 4 years time. I won't. Gainey didn't either with the Nieuwendyk trade and that worked for him. We'd be set for 4-5 years if this deal was ever made and in that time 4-5 new draft picks would be selected. So the farm is still prospering. Ribeiro, Ryder, Lang <---- he'd have to go to the wing Koivu, Zednik, Dagenais Bulis, Sundstrom, Juneau Langdon, Begin, Dackell/Perreault We'd finally have 2 top lines.

Even with Lang and Witt or any other rent-me-for-a-couple-of-months players, too many stars would have to align for the Habs to win the Cup this year. No thanks. I'll take my chances with what the future has to bring.

The prospect of having a #1 scorer in the league inserted in our team and a gritty defenseman seems to be a good step to take. Lang is on a 12 game point streak as of today....JAGR has been gone for 13 games and Bondra has been gone for about 4. What do you think he could do with Koivu, Ryder, Ribiero, Zednik!!! And how would this look for a D...
Souray Quintal Rivet Witt Brisebois Markov
That would be a solid playoff D...
We need to do something and after this week if the Habs lose back to back against Ottawa and Boston Gainey should move.
