I am intensely curious if he read the tea leaves a bit here and was like "hmmmmmm, how can I put a giant 'pick me' sign on myself" for the near certain house cleaning that the Habs are about to do if they don't come out of the gates on fire.
It's almost as if he is trolling the Habs.

God I hope not. He's not an NHL calibre coach. We'd go from a 'system' designed to rely on a goalie and not use our speed to one where all we did was fore check and forget defensive responsibilities. MacKinnon has all but stagnated under Roy. They need a strong coach capable of getting the best out of his players. Mac has a lot more to give.

I'm just disappointed Therrien hasn't won a Jack Adams. And I think the Roy resignation is only exactly what he says it is....differing viewpoints on how the team will be built. I'd never want him as a coach but I respect his walking away from a lot of money on principle.

Lightning in a bottle, not unlike Therrien's first year. Varlamov was other-worldly, they played up tempo and scored. However, their possession stats were horrible. I can't remember what their PP was like that year without looking it up. With Mac, Duchene, and Landeskog they have skill up front. Barrie gives them one dynamic player on defense. They just don't take care of the puck as a group, and if your best players don't break 60 points you're going to have a hard time making up for that. I don't want to put too much stock in +/-, but we signed their highest rated player last year - Zach Redmond. Iggy was -22. Johnson and Barrie were -19 and -17 respectively. Of the players that played at least 50 games, the only plus player was Tanguay at +3. Maybe it's just a group that can't play D. Maybe upgrading the back end will help. In the end, Roy couldn't get them to play anything that resembling a structured 2-way game.

From Roy's comments today, it would appear he wanted exactly the scenario that MT has with MB. High level input and even final say on roster moves are something Patrick wants.

As a coach, he reminds me of Mario Tremblay, without the self control.

Anyone think he might wind up in Las Vegas ... being the inaugural coach/GM/VP, etc would be quite the opportunity ...
Cheers.

Roy on the market will forever be linked to the Habs until he finds another job, especially by certain factions of the media who see him as a dream replacement. If you want a different and I think much more accurate assessment, give Craig Button's rant on TSN TO radio yesterday a listen. I do not see a ton of support for him playing any role with the Habs amongst the fans on the usual message boards. Some "new blood" for the media and fans to talk about in the dog days of summer if nothing else. Don't see this puppy getting to 43 pages though!!

Thanks, blny. That is interesting article and the numbers are dramatic. Unfortunately, I do not watch more than five Colorado games per season so I struggle to locate the causes of this malaise. Is it asset acquisition issue or asset management issue? Or does it also involve Roy simply not making the system he envisions intelligible to the players?
It is hard to know where he resurfaces. Las Vegas? Perhaps, but maybe McPhee wants more system-defined low profile coach than big personality hockey legend. Montreal? Perhaps, but it will not happen soon. Even in depressing event that Price cannot stay healthy or he does stay healthy but Habs flame out early (round one or being handled easily in round two) then the next step for Bergevin is to fire Therrien and select next coach. I cannot see Bergevin hiring Patrick Roy.

I cannot see Bergevin hiring Patrick Roy. For me, when I have watched them, and even in that playoff run, they lacked structure. It was as if Roy was determined to coach an NHL team like he coached in junior. He let them run wild, with little or no regard to their own end. They were aggressive, and it was exciting, but it doesn't win long term in this day and age.

I cannot see Bergevin hiring Patrick Roy. You never know. Moreso since Roy resigned, he's a free agent, and since he isn't under contract anywhere, Bergevin could add him as a consultant while Roy figures out his next move, and for Roy a consulting contract close to home could be fun. Still, it looks to me like Roy has turned into a bit of a Mario Tremblay/Michel Therrien-type coach : a motivator rather than an Xs and O's type of coach... and those guys are either head coaches, or just can't find a slot to slide into in a management or assistant coach role.

This is astute comparison, I believe. Therrien may possess advantage with coaching experience and appreciation for how hard is to arrive at top of hockey mountain and Roy may possess slight advantage as motivator in sense that he not only stood in NHL players skates but he scaled the heights they can only dream to attain.
Could Roy come into the fold now in some capacity? Maybe it is possible. Hiring Muller may signify that Bergevin is moving from necessity outside his friendship and neighborhood clique. In some ways it may be less scary to have Roy inside the organisation than loose outside with everyone, including Geoff Molson, seeing a legend commenting on what is wrong if in fact things are less than great in 2016-17.

Hiring Muller may signify that Bergevin is moving from necessity outside his friendship and neighborhood clique. As this article states, Therrien and Bergevin discussed they'd need somebody for the PP. Then the Blues' situation came up. Therrien conducted the initial correspondence and told Berg to get it done. “I talked to him (Thursday) morning and I called Bergy and I told him we had to seal the deal,” said Therrien. “We knew there would be other teams after him.”As far as Roy being hired in any Habs' capacity, I doubt the Twins would want another master chef in their kitchen. Roy has been very clear as to his desired job titles and authority.

Too bad they didn't have that kind of conviction when they were talking to Larry Robinson ... oh yeah, Roy ... just a thought, but if Therrien goes, then Bergevin goes (that's what Berg said, anyway) and that would leave the door open for a guy like Roy to run the whole show and I don't want him running the whole show in Montreal ... it would be a media feeding frenzy ... Cheers.
