Danis/Price seems to be the future. Now, let's see what we can get for Théodore, the guy who said a week ago that the prospect of free agency was very exciting for him.

Price is at least 5 years away of getting a job in the NHL... Goalies become very good at 25-26--- Players will now be UFA at 27...
What a stupid move.
Or maybe they will trade him today for a late first round pick + something else??? Gainey and Timmins almost looked embarassed on the platform...

The planny would seem to be Yanni Danis.

Exactly what I said in the Price thread. Personally, I'd like to see it happen. It's the only thing that makes sense to me. You're not going to trade Price or Huet or Danis.......so why pick Price with the extremely fortunate #5 pick in a talent-laden draft? The only one who could get you something in return is Theo.

Price is 17 years old. He won't be in Montreal for several years, so Theo's job is safe for now.

I don't see where the connexion between Price and Théodore lies. At least for the next five years.

The message I get is that the Habs don't think the odds of retaining Theo next year are all that good. In fact I'd show him the door early this season if Danis exhibits any kind of potential. So Gainey and Gillett are probably tired of Theo and his agent and their blackmail routine. That will make winning kinda tough for the immediate future (unless a short term fix like Belfour is signed), but the FA market has changed big time, so maybe getting that quality goalie won't be as hard as we guessed. You can always question Theo's playoff record. He's been living for a long time off that game against New Jersey, but as the saying goes, "What's he done for us lately?"

Even if Theo is gone next week, Price won't be an NHLer before 2010, so we'd have to replace Theo from outside the organisation, regardless - unless Danis is ready, which again isn't linked to Price.

Brisebois - Gainey support versus fans - big salary (demands?) - gone.
Théodore - Gainey support re "family problems" - big salary demands - (gone?)
Business as usual. You do not hold Bob Gainey hostage. Pointe finale.

Interesting POV, and I can agree with this objection to picking a goalie. Still, counting on free agency for getting goalies leaves you at risk depending on what other teams do, and you usually have to add in that you usually have to pay up more for a UFA, to lure him away from another situation.

That's my only critic with this pick. But other than that, it's ok for me. He won't score as many goals than Brulé, but if he can become a great goaltender, then ok, do it. I still hope that they trade to get Bourret.

It seems that Gainey and company feel that trading Théodore will fill more holes than it will create.

Theodore to agent, "What Price are you asking now?"
Theodore, Danis, Price. Theo's best year (trophiy) is now a tarnished memory. Danis is improving every year. Price has potential, but so did DiPietro on drat day.
In Gainey I trust, but my faith is being tested.

It seems that Gainey and company feel that trading Théodore will fill more holes than it will create. I think you're extrapolating unreasonably here. Talking of trading someone smack after a draft? The closest comparison would be Calgary getting Kidd and trading Vernon, and there Vernon wasn't traded for 4 seasons, and were in dire trouble in goal afterwards because Kidd wasn't ready. Let them trade him, and then we can rate how much importance they gave players or gaps in the roster.

Do you think Théodore is untradeable? Do you resist the idea that he may be traded? Do you deny that he is our most valuable asset in terms of receiving a good return? Do you think Bob Gainey is sentimentally attached to him? Théodore's days in Montréal are numbered.

Yes, 1 year at the latest. But one mustn't cut off their nose etc. You don't throw away the life preserver until you have a hand on the life raft. I'm just hoping Gainey has that life raft in tow already or at least in sight.

It seems that Gainey and company feel that trading Théodore will fill more holes than it will create. I agree that trading Theo can fill more holes than it creates, provided some GM values Theo as highly as Jose does. In todays market there are so many UFA's available, holes can be filled without having to trade.

so why pick Price with the extremely fortunate #5 pick in a talent-laden draft? The only one who could get you something in return is Theo. After you get past Crosby, Johnson and Pouliot, the other top prospects all had serious question marks and concerns about their game... Ryan has skating problems, Kopitar comes from a country not known for producing NHL talent, Brule may be too small to play his style in the NHL (which could lead to an injury-prone NHL career), Staal is going to be a solid player but is not expected to be a star... and so on and so on. I admit that I too was shocked with Timmins announcing Price's name, but aside from Crosby, Johnson and Pouliot, perhaps Price is who the Habs' scouting staff saw as the player who has the most potential and who has the least number of question marks about him. Price is no chopped liver compared to the other top prospects of this draft. Most rankings had him in the top ten anyways. He may have gone a few spots before he was supposed to go, but that kind of thing always depends on how much of a need the team stepping up to the podium has. The Habs didn't have a blue-chip goaltending prospect in their system. Now they do.

I can't see how picking a 17 year old goalie today really concerns Theodore and his agent. Why would he be concerned about a guy that won't be in the league for five years. They had a shot at a bona fide player and opted for a project - not what you do with a number 5 pick. This is similar to Milbury's pick several years ago. He could have had Heatley and opted for DiPietro. The Habs have just done the same thing.

The situations between the Isles and Habs are somewhat similar but one thing is different... Bob Gainey is not Mike Milbury.

Bo and co. have a plan...and it's not one that will squander their best pick in 20 years.

I'm trying to find a silver lining and I'm looking hard. We still need Theo. Danis will need most minutes for the Hab's and Price will need a backup in Hamilton. As long as Theo's attitude is good, he can help as a backup in Hamilton.

Danis will need most minutes for the Hab's and Price will need a backup in Hamilton. That's a possible situation in 2007-2008, if Theo is gone, Danis is #1 and Price is on his way up.
