He made our house laugh often enough ... he made a whack of movies, but I best remember him from "Kelly's Heroes" ... I think the last movie I saw him in, though, might have been "Casino"... but, all that said I'll remember him because he made me laugh ...

The black jack scene from Casino always sticks with me when I think Rickles. He said very little dialogue, but so much with his eyes. I think most would agree he played the lovable 'a$$hole' better than anyone. Schtick turned off, he was apparently a very sweet man.

Yes, by all accounts he was the polar opposite of his stage persona....and, from what I've seen, almost always ended his barbed wire routines with heartfelt (yet maudlin-sounding) sentiment.
I don't think a stand-up could start out today with a schtick like that. Russell Peters is an equal opportunity insulter, but that's a different dynamic. The world could use a little more political-INcorrectness, not less.
I loved Rickles. Confident, fearless, quick....and a performer that hit a note with audiences from Sinatra to Letterman. A vault of re-treaded jokes and insults...but it worked for decades. It was an honour to be slammed by him.
Only one guy could make fun of a steroid-bloated Jerry Lewis on his 1998 Muscular Dystrophy Telethon.

I don't consider Rickles to be the prototypical 'stand-up comic'. Sure, he did it. But, while I'm sure he had stuff in mind to work from, so much of his best stuff was off-the-cuff. He reacted, usually immediately, to his surroundings. He had a comeback for any situation and was rarely left speechless.
It's a completely different skill than sitting down and writing jokes. He could, and did, do it. Quick wit like that is rare.
