Per Friedman last night. Kovalchuk, 34, is looking to come back to the NHL. According to sources, he is still Devil's property. He either has to return and play with them, or negotiate a sign and trade with another team.

Given that the Devils will be negotiating with the team he's been able to make a deal with, they'll have little leverage if they don't want him. I expect they'll get a 2nd rounder for their troubles. And if he's not looking for more than 3 years, I'd be ok with giving him a shot in Montreal. In 2001 apparently André Savard was willing to sell the farm to get him at #1 overall, so it would be interesting to see him make it here. (rumored offer was Markov and the Komisarek and Perezhogin 1st round picks, as well as a 4th piece. Garon maybe?)

I'm not completely opposed to the idea. He's lost a step according to people who've watched him. Consensus seems to be that at this stage he can likely be a 30+30 guy. On a 2-3 year deal, for what Max is making now, I'd consider it. I'd definitely be talking to Radulov about him. They played together in recent years. Alex will know whether it's a smart move or not.

Most, if not all, of these guys are playing tax free. He knows he isn't getting that deal in the NHL. There's only a couple of states that can offer anything close - Nevada, Florida and Texas. If he truly wants a shot at the cup, I don't see those markets interesting him. Dallas needs defense and goal tending, not a 34 year old winger. Tampa is in their own cap crunch. Florida is in a greater state of turmoil than Montreal. Nevada is raw. If he goes there, it's to play in anonymity and he doesn't care about a shot at a title. Dadonov plays with Shipachyov. If Max were moved for picks, prospects, or defense, he'd be an intriguing option. He's not big though. hockeydb has him at 28. Gusev was a Tampa pick in 2012. He'd be 25 to start the next season. I'm not sure if he's a free agent or not.

Mystery solved ... There is two of them. The younger plays for Minsk The elder , March 12, 1989, plays for St. Petersburg SKA

The only reason he wants to come back is to win a cup....so he's not going to sign with the highest bidder, he'll be looking to sign with teams that he feels are legit contenders.

That's my gut feeling. I think he's motivated in that regard. Having Markov and Radulov around wouldn't be bad ...
