It's simply good manners, frozone. If I was in Bergevin's shoes, I'd let the agent know, but I'd call Robinson personally as well. You have to respect the coach and by telling him through his agent, it would be like e-mailing him or texting him. I've never had to deal with someone who has an agent, but I've often had to tell job applicants they were unsuccessful. I always talked to them personally. I never, for example, left a voice mail other than to ask them to call me, or advised a parent or spouse that the candidate didn't get the job. It really is pretty basic stuff. Trump wouldn't do that, but then, who wants to be lumped in with him. Regarding manners, yes I agree. It would have been courteous to willingly give a call after having broken the news to the agent first. Especially if Robinson had just experienced a serious storm, why not give him a friendly ring to show that you care a little about his well being. But speaking of lack of manner, imo, its an even greater lack of manners to take those conversations and air them to the public in a pretty obvious attempt to make MB the villain and Robinson the victim in the "Why didn't Robinson sign with the Habs" story. Maybe it's just me being cynical, but Cape sounds like he's trying to protect Robinson's standing with the Montreal fanbase. If word got out afterwards that Robinson interviewed and was offered a contract with the Habs yet decided to go coach in San Jose, hearts would be broken and his relationship with the city would no doubt be affected. And I wouldn't even blame Cape/Robinson for protecting his legacy after such a storied career. I just don't like being misled for such a purpose.

Gainey turned down Robinson once, IIRC...and so did Gauthier....according to Cape. Now Larry and Cape have this same story. This time we know Berg cancelled the meeting after hiring JJD. If Big Bird is to come back, it'll have to be at the insistence of Julien. And...um....no interview required. After all, Muller was hired over the phone. A 5-second conversation is all that's needed. "We'd love to have you guiding our D...let us know your arrival time and we'll have a car waiting for you...." NHL Business 101.

Too late. Florida has signed him. I say the Panthers make the playoffs easily next season.

Too late. Florida has signed him. I say the Panthers make the playoffs easily next season. From nbcsports On Monday, a report from 91.9 FM radio’s Jean-Charles Lajoie said Robinson will join the Panthers, becoming a development coach for the team’s defensemen. Lajoie added Robinson will work strictly in Sunrise, and not travel with the club.=============================== So, not behind-the-bench. Robinson is strictly D-development at home practices. Daigneault is likely staying put, then. Okay...so why not replace Rob Ramage, if Robinson's desire was to work in that capacity? In 2014, Bergevin hired Ramage as Player Development Coach for ALL positions-- "particularly our young defensemen" said Berg at the time. =============================== Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin, announced Wednesday the appointment of Rob Ramage as player development coach with the Club.“We welcome Rob Ramage as part of our hockey personnel. Rob is a dedicated and competent hockey person who will contribute to our player development group. Our entire organization, and particularly our young defensemen will benefit from his experience and his knowledge”, said Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin.
Ramage, 55, was employed by the St. Louis Blues organization as amateur scout for the past two seasons (2012-13 and 2013-14). He also worked as an assistant coach with the OHL’s London Knights during the 2011-12 season.================================ So Florida now has a Cup-winning head coach (as well one of the top all-time two-way defensemen) working SOLELY with their D. The Habs keep a guy who was an assistant coach in the OHL, and an amateur scout for 2 years with the Blues, developing the whole team. Can't fire Rob Ramage. He's done such a bang-up job. But let's not start blaming our people...That would make 4 times the Habs passed on Larry Robinson. Gainey, Gauthier, and Bergevin twice. Our main leadership problem is not in the locker room, IMO....

I must have missed the Panthers announcement of their new head coach. Did they hire someone?

Let's try that again. To paraphrase Mark Twain, Robinson himself says reports of his signing with Florida are greatly exagerrated. He's still available.

Robinson has a fantastic track record coaching d-men. Obviously Robinson did not rank high for Therrien or Bergevin, because for the former he would have represented a real threat since Big Bird is legend of the club with silverware everywhere you look, and for the latter Robinson was not qualified since he could not pass the 'are you my buddy' test.
I have no idea what Julien thinks of Robinson or Daigneault for that matter. However, something tells me that in hockey circles Robinson's phone rings far more frequently than Daigneault's. For me a good confidence building move in a summer of discontent would be for Molson to definitively inform Bergevin and Julien that there is in fact room for Robinson (if Robinson does not want to travel, then he replaces Ramage) and they are going to accept upgrades in the coaching and development areas of the organsation because this is a non cap controlled competitive advantage that intelligent organisations take advantage of.

But...if he doesn't want to be behind the bench...then, as folatre says above, Berg should still hire him as a home-practice specialist for our D. Keep Ramage, who cares? The franchise has deep pockets...if they truly want the best....

I don't recall why Robinson left the Devils, but imagine if Lamoriello hires him in whatever capacity....
