I thought he did quite a number on our forwards in the playoffs--one of the Rangers' better D in that series, IMO.
Oh well...he's 33...asset-cap-management.

I really don't think Girardi is as bad as many people make him out to be. Defensively, he still holds his own imo. It's his transition/possession game that kinda stinks. To me, that doesn't make him a bad defenseman - he just needs support (ie pair him with a quality puck mover). More than anything, he's just part of a dying breed. Stay at home dmen are losing value in this league.

His $5.5 million cap hit was the big issue. They free up some space, get younger and likely more mobile.

He is bottom 5 of all d-men in possession stats, both offensively and defensively. He's very good at blocking shots, so that's the saving grace for spending more time than you should in your own end. The question always is...why are you in your own end to start with? Not only is he expensive, he was also tied up for 5 more seasons! The perfect definition of a CAP anchor. The Rangers really had no choice and even then, they're going to be hurt CAP wise for the next 6 years at $2.6, 3.6, 3.6, 1.1, 1.1, 1.1. That's what a bad contract costs you.
