If NHL expansion had occurred last summer, Blue Jackets forwards Alexander Wennberg and Josh Anderson and backup goaltender Joonas Korpisalo would have been exempt from exposure to the league’s new franchise in Las Vegas. The Blue Jackets’ protected list would have been easy, the expansion draft relatively painless.
One year later, much has changed. Next week is likely to be painful for the Jackets.
Sources around the NHL have indicated to The Dispatch that the Blue Jackets have reached agreement with the Vegas Golden Knights on a trade that will be announced during the expansion draft Wednesday in Las Vegas. With this trade the Blue Jackets will pay dearly to dissuade the Golden Knights from taking Anderson, Korpisalo or one of the veteran defensemen — Jack Johnson or David Savard — that they would have exposed.
The Jackets are believed to be trading this year’s first-round draft pick (No. 24 overall) and a prospect (not Pierre-Luc Dubois or Sonny Milano) to Vegas for assurances that the Golden Knights will select either left wing Matt Calvert, center William Karlsson or defenseman Ryan Murray.
Vegas’ acquisition of the contract of injured veteran forward David Clarkson ($5.25 million salary cap hit) may also be part of the deal.
Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen would not comment on his club’s protected list or any possible trades. Las Vegas general manager George McPhee has been asked by the NHL to keep all trades under wraps until the roster of the league’s 31st franchise is revealed in a made-for-TV production Wednesday.
The NHL’s roster freeze goes into effect at 3 p.m. Saturday for all clubs except Las Vegas. By 5 p.m., the other clubs must submit their protected lists to the league.
The Jackets and Golden Knights have had at least the framework of a deal in place for weeks. The one outlined by NHL sources indicates that the the Blue Jackets are eager to protect their cadre of young players already established in the NHL and also their top two defensive pairs, which have become a strength.
The Blue Jackets view Calvert and Karlsson as bottom-six, checking-first forwards. Murray, the No. 2 overall draft pick in 2012, slid to the third pair last season and faces stiff competition for ice time from young players in the system.
To be clear: The Blue Jackets don’t want to lose any of them, but such is life in the expansion draft. Vegas must take one player from every team.
Losing the first-round pick would hurt, too, especially for a general manager with the extensive scouting background of Kekalainen. The Jackets don’t have a second-round pick after trading the No. 55 overall selection to Vancouver as compensation for hiring coach John Tortorella from the Canucks early in the 2015-16 season.
If they trade the first-round pick and make no other moves involving the draft, the Jackets would make their first selection next weekend in Chicago late in the third round, the No. 86 overall pick. It may be easier now than ever for the Blue Jackets to part with a first-round pick. Not only is it a late pick — the Jackets had the fourth-best record in the NHL this season — but the draft class is said to be the weakest in several seasons.
Kekalainen was one of the few NHL general managers who did not attend the scouting combine in Buffalo, New York, this month. Also, the Blue Jackets do not have their customary official draft party planned.

Am I reading this article correctly? Teams can make pre-draft "hands-off compensation deals" with Vegas?
We've managed ourselves into a corner here....so we'll give you x, y, and z if you'll leave our unprotected a, b, and c alone.

Yeah, that's pretty well it. Successful teams that rely on more players of good quality will be hurt more than successful teams that rely on a few key guys with fillers everywhere else. Then there are the teams that just don't have a ton of talented guys. They won't be hurt. I should say they won't be hurt more as they already are hurting because of their management teams. What will be of great interest on Wednesday are the deals made by Vegas in conjuction with one or two or perhaps 3 other teams. Habs could, for example, offer Galchenyuk up for Derek Pouliot or Nick Bonino of Pittsburgh plus Marco Scandella of Minny (who some tweets said Habs were very interested in). There are some decent players available, so teams could certainly work something out that way. McPhee might not value those players as much as their own GM's. Not that I'm advocating trading Chuck for those two. Scandella's another stay at home dman. BUT....he was born in Montreal.

In other words, Vegas could end up with 3-4 first round picks this year and are set to be worlds ahead of where previous expansion teams have started.

Cheers.
