I definitely think he left money on the table to stay. Can't blame him for wanting to stay at all.

That is a rich deal and perhaps a sign of where things are going economically in the league, but I am not surprised by 8.5 AAV for max term.
To have a big two down the middle locked up is strategically wise (and to have them at all is a little lucky). There is a path to the top of the mountain with pieces like those, even if it means 21 million of cap space invested annually in two players. For me there is not much of a pathway to the summit spending 18.5 million in cap space on a goalie and stay at home d-man. Time will say.
