Just wanted to give a quick update on how some of the Habs' prospects did this Friday night (Oct 7th). I will try and compile some regular cumulative stats updates every month or so during the season, so this may make a decent sticky.
In the Q, Dulac had one assist and Lacasse was in net for a Baie-Comeau win despite giving up 4 goals on the night. Gui had another multi point night with 1g 2a in an OT loss, and Aubin had the lone Lewiston goal to carry on with his quick start.
In the OHL, Kosty Jr found the net again with one goal for London, D'Agostini had two assists, and Greg Stewart was held pointless. Of note, late Hamilton cut Jamie Tardif had a goal and an assist for Greg's Peterborough team.
In the WHL it was prospect vs prospect, as Carey Price held Chipchura off the scoresheet in regulation and stopped him head to head in the shootout. Tri City won 4-3 in a shootout, giving Price a win.
In the NCAA, Philippe Paquet (7th rounder this past draft and second last guy picked in the whole draft) had a nice NCAA debut getting an assist for Clarkson. His combination of good wheels and decent size could bode well for a decent season for this freshman.

Chipchura just doesn't have the skill level that you would hope for with a first round pick. He will end up similar to Garth Murray, the player that Montreal acquired for Marcel Hossa. It is reassuring that Paquet is starting for Clarkson as a freshman, and playing the powerplay, although the team is not exactly an NCAA powerhouse. Kostitsyn seems to have been pushed off the top line and powerplay in London with the return of Rob Schremp and Dylan Hunter, so I don't think the points will be coming quite as quickly. Aubin and D'Agostini are doing about what would be expected for 19 year old offensive players in junior. They have to score 100 points in their final season to be realistic NHL prospects, I would say. Same with Chipchura, if he plugs along at a point per game, then he better bulk up so he can be an enforcer as a pro.

Both Kostitsyn's are going to be flops, Latendresse is a joke, Price is a flash in the pan, Hossa and Balej were the real deal and should have been kept, Zhogin, Higgins and Plekanec aren't going to be able to last more than a week in the NHL..... Théodore will soon breakdown...... this team is going to the dumps....

A bit of a comparative might be nice though, just so the numbers mean something (ie, comparing to players from within a few years who we might know, or to other similar picks, to see if they're evolving the right way)

Same with Chipchura, if he plugs along at a point per game, then he better bulk up so he can be an enforcer as a pro. For an 18th pick in a poor draft year Chipcura's skill level is fine. He was precisely what the team was looking for, a big, agressive, two-way center that will someday have the task of shutting down the opponent's top centers. Nothing has changed in that projection. I think you're placing your expectations too high. 100 points for D'agostini or it's a disappointing season? First off, he's still 18, and by the time he turns 19 the league will be 1/4 of the way through the season. He has two more years of junior eligibility remaining (as does Aubin), and he'll likely take one more since this is only his second OHL season. He made Guelph last year as a walk-on, so for him to be averaging an assist per game so far and running Guelph's power play from the point position is quite encouraging. Aubin had a grand total of 45 points last season playing with Bourret and Picard- for him to be averaging 2 points per game without them is a pleasant surprise no matter how you spin it.

I'm talking about the level they have to reach to be NHL players. Not saying that less than 100 points for D'Agostini is a "disappointing" season at the junior level. It just means that he would never be more than a cup of coffee NHLer. Not that you expect more from a 6th round draft pick, but sometimes they surprise.

A bit of an update on some of our guys who have played up to last night.
D'Agostini (Guelph OHL) 8gp 2g 8a 10pts 16pim +3 - Matt is coming of a great rookie season and is already picking up where he left off by being 4th in team scoring, only 2 points behind the points leader. His speed and skill will help a solid Guelph team and he is on pace to shatter his points from last season.
S. Kostitsyn (London OHL) 9gp 5g 12a 17pts 6pim -2 - Sergei is enjoying a very fast start in London, and enjoyed some plush ice time with Robbie Schremp up in Edmonton's camp and Dylan Hunter at Buffalo's. Both are back, likely spreading some of the top ice time around a bit, but Sergei is still getting points and likely will be a top 6 guy all season due to his fast start and first season in North America. He is currently second overall in scoring only trailing Bolland who is off to a torrid start with 26 points.
Stewart (Peterborough OHL) 9gp 4g 3a 7pts 15pim +1 - Greg is a hard worker, who is known for his skating, checking and hustle, but is now showing some ability to contribute on the scoreboard as well. Greg is on pace to top his 34 points from last season, so a good start on a team that is heavily favoured to be one of the top OHL teams battling for a Memorial Cup berth. This team has some solid offensive forwards (Ryder, Staal, Tardif, etc.), so expect Greg to chip in with some nice two way play.
Latendresse (Drummondville QMJHL) 3gp 4g 4a 8pts 6pim +2 - When Gui has a two goal game and it brings his points per game average down, you know he has had a fast start. What else needs to be said about Gui's performances to date this early fall.
Aubin (Lewiston QMJHL) 9gp 7g 9a 16pts 8pim +3 - Mathieu is leading his team in scoring by a long shot, and despite losing some talented teammates from last season, he is on pace for an even better season production wise despite missing preseason due to injury. He also missed the Top Prospects game and part of the season due to injury last season, so is hoping for a full and healthy season to showcase his skills.
Dulac-Lemelin (Baie-Comeau QMJHL) 9gp 2g 3a 5pts 18pim +4 - Alex is off to a productive start, and based on my view of him at the rookie camp, he will likely need a really solid season to warrant a contract offer next summer from the Habs. He likely will get lots of ice time, so it will be his to make the most of this season.
Chipchura (Prince Albert WHL) 6gp 3g 4a 7pts 11pim +5 - Kyle is on the same pace as he was last season before that horrible achilles tendon injury. Prince Albert will be looking to Captain Chip for more production this season and he is off to a good start.
Mikhail Grabovsky (Dynamo Moscow RSL) 12gp 2g 7a 9pts 16pim - Good start for Mikhail since his controversial move to the defending Russian Super League champs. He is already in 21st place in RSL scoring and only a few points out of a top 15 spot. He is on pace to better last year's great season with his old club in a league enhanced with many locked out NHL stars.
Konstantin Korneev (Ak Bars Kazan RSL) 5gp 0g 1a 1pt 0pim - Konstantin missed the start of the season with a facial laceration, but has played ever since coming back from injury. His best point total in the RSL was 10 points.
Alexei Emelin (Lada Togliatti RSL) 12gp 1g 1a 2pts 16pim - Alexei's team is in financial trouble, as Dan Linn has documented in another thread. However, that aside, there is much to cheer about his start to date. Alexei only managed 12 games all last season due to team depth on D. This season, he has played in 12 of the first 14 games already, and now looks firmly established on the lineup which means good ice time for this 19 year old. He has already doubled his top point production of one point from last season, and look for him to make a good case to return to the Russian WJC team in his last year of eligibility.
Juraj Mikus (Skalica HK 36 Slovakia Elite Liga) 12gp 1g 2a 3pts 16pim - 18 year old Juraj is off to a relatively slow start, but is on pace to match his output from last season where he made his Elite league debut as a 17 year old. His team is wallowing near the bottom of the table, so let's hope he can get lots of ice time to develop his game. Look for Juraj to increase his point production once he gets into a groove.
Oskari Korpikari (Karpat Finnish Elite League) 10gp 0g 1a 1pts 14pim - Oskari missed a lot of games last year due to injury and military obligations. Karpat is again one of the top threats for the league championship and is already well entrenched in their D lineup. His next point will be his new career high for points, so expect that sometime soon!!
Phillipe Paquet (Clarkson NCAA) 2gp 0g 1a 1pt - The Quebec native came directly from US prep school to the NCAA and has played in both of his team's non-conference games to date as a freshman. His smooth skating and size likely will get lots of ice time for him as a frosh in the NCAA, and he rewarded that with a point in his first NCAA game.
I will update the goalies shortly and the Ham Dogs are making their season debut as we speak (or as I type). I am listening to Derek Wills, who kept me entertained in a lockout year, so glad to hear his voice again on an off night for our beloved Habs.
Cheers!!

How are they all doing you ask, well here are some stats up to yesterday's games:
Paquet (Clarkson NCAA) - 4gp 1g 1a 2pts 12 pim (good start for a rookie Dman)
O'Byrne (Cornell NCAA) - 1gp 1g 1a 1pt 3shots
Gleed (Cornell NCAA) - 1gp 0pts
Linhart (Pardubice CZE) - 18gp 1g 0a 1pt 18pim
Korpikari (Karpat FIN) - 14gp 0g 1a 1pt 16pim
Korneev (Ak Bars RUS) - 8gp 0g 1a 1pt 0pim
Emelin (Lada Togliatti RUS) - 15gp 1g 2a 3pts 26pim (career numbers for games played and points, with lots of hockey left in Russia)
Grabovsky (Dynamo RUS) - 15gp 2g 7a 9pts 20pim (a mini scoreless streak for him)
Mikus (Skalica SLO) - 17gp 2g 3a 5pts 18pim
Heino-Lindberg (Farjestad SWE) - 3gp 1.68gaa .934 save% (great start for a rookie in the SEL)
Latendresse (Drummondville) - 8gp 6g 5a 11pts 23pim +4 (is he bored? see other thread)
Aubin (Lewiston) - 14gp 9g 13a 22pts 10pim -1 (leads team and is 13th in the Q in scoring)
Dulac (Baie-Comeau) - 13gp 3g 3a 6pts 26pim +5
D'Agostini (Guelph) - 13gp 4g 17a 21pts 20pim +10 (leads team and is 14th in the OHL)
Kostitsyn (London) - 12gp 10g 16a 26pts 12pim -1 (third on team, 4th in the OHL, and leads all OHL rookies by 8 points over young stud Tavares)
Stewart (Peterborough) - 12gp 6g 4a 10pts 17pim +5
Chipchura (Prince Albert) - 10gp 3g 7a 10pts 17pim (2nd in team in scoring)
Long Beach (ECHL): Long Beach is off to a slow 0-3 start, so not much to cheer for yet. Urquhart played in all three games, has no points, and a -3 to show for it (not many players with a better plus/minus). Halak played 8 minutes and gave up one goal on three shots. Bonneau played in two scoreless games, no pim's yet. Sandford just joined the team so has not played yet. Ex-Hab prospect Christian Larrivee leads the team in scoring after the three games.
Hamilton (AHL): A 2W-3L season so far, with some guys off to a good start including: Corey Locke (6pts in 5gp), rookie Dman Andre Benoit (5pts in 5gp including 3 goals), Ferland (3pts in 5gp). Some guys likely need to pick up the offense a bit: Lambert (2pts in 5gp), Kostitsyn (2pts in 5gp), Milroy (1pt in 5gp). Hainsey has 2a in 3gp.

Yeah, but Linhart is stinking up Czecheslovakia so our farm is going down the tubes. Until we have 18 guys who play like Crosby on steroids, our farm is in trouble.

It's a brother act I sure hope makes it.

A lot of players have good careers despite the fact that they don't have Andrei Kastitsyn's talent level. Sergei Kostitsyn may be one of those. At this point he is more likely to have a successful NHL career than his older more talented less motivated brother.

last week, the European Champions Cup was held in St. Petersburg, Russia, featuring Davos (SUI), Karpat (FIN), Dynamo Moscow (Rus), Slovan Bratislava (SLO), Pardubice (CZE) and Frolunda (SWE). the Habs' were represented by 2 players, Oskari Korpikari (Karpat) and Mikhail Grabovsky (Dynamo). after winning both of their group games, both Karpat and Dynamo advanced to the finals. the Russians were more successful, winning the finals 5-4 after shootout.
Mikhail Grabovsky showed that he can still be considered as one of the better forward prospects, leading this strong tournament in goalscoring with 4 goals and tying for first in points with 8 (2g in a 3-1 win against Slovan, 1g and 3a in a 5-1 win against Pardubice and 1g and 1a in the finals), same as his teammate Maxim Sushinsky. he was also +3. this was enough to get him the best forward award and a place on the tournament all star team.
Korpikari didn't have as much success as Grabovsky, finishing the tournament without points and -1.

Don't forget Tomas Linhart who played with Pardubice, he put up the same numbers as Korpikari, 0 pts, -1. Other Hab draftees, Mikkola and Ujick both were teammates with Korpikari. I got to see last years ECC final, between Korpikari's Karpat and Perezhogin's Omsk. I hope to catch this years game, sounds like it was a really good game.

ups, I did forget about Linhart , but as for Ujcik and Mikkola, I left them out on purpose since I don't think anyone considers them Habs' prospects anymore. some people I know watched the ECC and said that Grabovsky was really dominant in some games which is always good to hear. R.

A real shame about Linhart. Another second rounder wasted it would seem. Still, with the lack of defensive depth in the Habs system right now, I wouldn't mind seeing him at camp next year, even if it is Hamilton's.

maybe, but would he really be interested in coming to play in the AHL since he's playing for the senior team in the Czech Extraliga? I think he knows well that his chances of cracking the Habs' D are slim, to say the least.

Kostistyn and D'Agostini are currently playing on Sportsnet. Both look good. Sergei K is playing the point on the London PP. He has a very good wrist shot and seems to have a lot of hockey sense, making good decisions and great passes ou there.
D'Agostini looks very fast. His quickness, but not his style of play, reminds me of Higgins and Plekanec. He was winning face-offs, making good passes, killing penalties and playing on the PP.

I watched the Guelph-London game. Very entertaining.
It was my first time seeing either Kostitsyn and D'Agostini. I'm very impressed. I find it hard to believe that they were late round picks. Kudos to Timmins and co.
The Sportsnet people were quite impressed with Kostitsyn calling him a possible steal. He sure did a great job playing point on the powerplay. D'Agostini was an offensive threat most of the game and has speed to burn. I think the comparison to Higgins is a good one.

Has Cory Urquhart started to slowly turn the corner. He picked up a couple of more points on the weekend and is gradually moving up the ladder in team scoring. I know it's only the ECHL but the guy is still young. Who knows, someday he may be a value part of the Bulldogs.

Grabovsky continues his hot scoring pace, with an assist today, keeps up his pt scoring streak and has 8 pts in the last 8 games after a real slow start to the season.
Emelin also with an assist his 10th pt of the year, also keeps up his scoring streak with 3 pts in the last 5 games. He still leads the team in scoring for defensemen although a former Hab pick Kruchinin ('98) who he is sometimes paired up with is only 1 pt behind him and having a career year. The team is led in scoring by former draft pick Alex Buturlin who has 15 pts on the season. Lada lost many of their top players when the team had to cut it's budget by 50% during the early part of the season.
Also of note is Andrei Sidyakin ('97) who is having a big year in the RSL, 4th in the league in goals and already has put up career numbers for Salavat UFA.
