www.habsworld.net/article.php?id=916With the start of the 2005-2006 season in the Russian Super league, things seemed to be going very well for Alexi Emelin, as the young defensemen was already enjoying a career year just a few short weeks into the new hockey season. But in a bizarre twist of events, Emelin’s team, Lada Togliatti just recently announced that the sponsors who have been financing the team have decided to cut the teams budget by fifty percent. The teams general manager has already been laid off, and a mad scramble has already begun to see where some of the teams top paid players will end up next month, as the team has told it’s players they are free to leave the organization since the players payroll will be cut by a large margin....

Is it Emelin or Yemelin? HF has it as the latter.

Kovalev or Kovalieff? Tattac, à vous. Never seen "Kovalieff". I have seen Yemelin and Emelin though. Next time you hear the RDS announcers you'll hear that pronunciation. It's a French thing. Ignatev = Ignatieff. I'm just wondering which is closest to the actual Russian pronunciation.

Ahhh, I see where you're going with this. Alas, I don't have RDS. I may end up getting it, but am holding out for now.

i think the problem is that, even though Aleksei's surname is spelled with an 'E' in cyrillic alphabet, AFAIK it is pronounced like you would pronounce 'Ye' if written in latinic alphabet.
Tattac will probably offer a better explanation if she finds the time.
