Well, at 54, I started first of October to lose 65 lbs, or there abouts. Today is In 26th of October and I have lost 13 pounds. Discovered things like kale, water cress and swiss chard. Eliminated pop, ice cream. potato chips, etc... cut back on breads, red meat, salt intake. I am really enjoying it...so far. Feel lighter and welcome the new foods

13 lbs in less than a month - excellent. Get yourself in good enough shape & maybe you'll get a call from Bergevin. I hear they need D men.

Way to go, GNick. What, and how much, we put into our bellies is 90% of the problem/solution, I bet. Throw a bit of cardio and light weights (or body-weight exercises) into the mix....and you've got a pretty healthy plan. p.s. I notice you didn't mention eliminating beer....or is that part of etc.?

Joel Fuhrman's book...Eat to Live. Is good for losing weight. He claims certain foods will help fight diseases also. But I cannot vouch for that. Some of his recipes in the back of book are great. Notice....I said some, not all!

Thought I would update this....forgot I put it on here. Seen it looking for Expos thread. I got down to 194lbs. Which was a little too thin, so I went back to 203lbs. At 6'1, it seems to be a reasonable weight for me. Took me awhile to figure it out, But it was easy as hell, I will tell you how.
Took a little over a year. Mostly did it a little at a time. I cut calories down 300 per day, from 3,000 to 2,700. Mainly, by cutting out Pepsi and potato chips. I still keep my chocolate and coffee. lol. I cut out restaurants, as much as I could. If you drop 300 calories per day, which was basically 10% of my diet. Don't really notice it. But in a year you will drop 32lbs. If you try to diet too hard, it will be difficult to sustain over long term. But slight increments of cut back are barely noticeable. I estimate 90% of population can do this.
Second, I started out walking 2.5 miles on average, back in '17. 5-6 times a week. I now can walk 7-8 miles with no trouble. Around 7 miles takes me roughly 2 hours. I burn between 6 to 7 calories per minute. Depending on speed and weather. So, 120 minutes I burn around 800 calories. About 5 days a week. You will drop roughly 58lbs in a year.
I kept a journal, may write a book on it someday. With healthy recipes I found. How different foods are stored on the body, etc... Quite interesting how this machine we call humans work.

That's fantastic news. You're patient approach really paid off. Too often people are impatient & look for the quick fix that doesnt always last.
Congratulations!

Well done, GNick.
That's a LOT of walking!
Reminds me of a Dangerfield-style joke: My doctor told me to walk 7 miles a day. After a week, I called him up. "Doc! I'm 49 miles from my house!"

Congratulations on your success. I started a diet/life style change a couple of years ago and lost 65 lbs and have been able to keep it off. Those very seldom times when you have that KFC or pizza you really appreciate it and know enough to get back on plan the next morning.
Keep it up!

Those very seldom times when you have that KFC or pizza you really appreciate it and know enough to get back on plan the next morning. Keep it up! Amazing what you can do. I quit smoking 23 years ago and always thought I could never beat it. I picked up smoking as a teenager and smoked for 20 years. The diet one, I kept remembering back to those smoking years. lol. I had the same thoughts, I could never beat it, etc... I had tried different diets over the years, short term success but not long term. I said I am going to try something different. Small changes over a long period of time is same weight loss as hard dieting for 4-5 months. But able to sustain, so far over 2 years. Almost 3 years.

Great stuff GNick!
As you said, too many people are focused on short term results, to their own detriment. Like, if I say "you're going to lose 4 lbs a month" many people would be supremely disappointed. "One pound a week?? Ugh". Of course if you tell them they are going to lose over 50lbs this year, most people would be ecstatic. Perception, and all.

He didn't recognize me at first. He is big, he asked me how I did it. I told him just remember; a little at a time takes awhile but you are going in right direction. Time goes by faster than we think. Losing 50lbs a year turns into 100 lbs loss very quickly.

It's amazing how quick it drops when you're a big guy... since you need to burn about 3500 calories to lose a pound of fat, if reduce your caloric intake by 1000 calories less than what you need to maintain your weight, you'll drop 2 pounds a week. About 5 years ago I did a drastic weight loss and dropped 80 pounds in just under 4 months (reduced intake and worked out like a banshee), but that proved unsustainable and I put the weight back on, so I'm going slow and steady now... with the nice weather coming I hope to be more active as well.

Yup, I found hard dieting/exercise affect for short term. But you have to keep it up or once you stop the weight finds it way back on. I lost around 60lbs this way back around '05, but the weight came back on. Even a little more for some reason? lol Back in '17, I tried weight loss again only this time I tried it different. I only made slight changes to my diet and exercise moderately. THis time I found success. I use to drink a lot of Pepsi and Coke, daily. I cut them out first. Around 2 glasses of Pepsi is around 250 calories alone. I drink more G2 now, tea or coffee sometimes. Found my digestive system seemed to be better also. Potato chips I ate too much. Could take out a large bag by myself watching a hockey or baseball game. Without realizing it. But it happened occasionally. I still have my chocolate, ice cream, etc.... Breads and processed foods are bad for you. Try to cut down slightly on them. I can remember vividly the first time I tried walking. lol I walked 2.5 miles and was totally played out. I weighted 330lbs at the time. I can walk 10-12 miles now without stopping. Not really a problem.

It is attainable. I think there is a fine line between success or failure. Only takes a little thing, and boom! Rather it being battling obese, addictions like alcohol, gambling, etc... Learnning the stock market, even smoking. Good to beat in the end. lol You can do it. I like walking. I usually download a sports podcast and go for a long walk. Hockey Central or At the Letters, etc... Get lost in thought. I like podcast over radio as it gets rid of the commercials. Some may like Yoga, weightlifting, golf, etc... Lots of enjoyable activities we can do to increase calorie burn.

What's you fellows resting heart rate? Mine is 62, i am 57 years old. Jenn got me a Fitbit for Christmas, getting into this stuff. Pretty slick I call it. Tells you how many hours you sleep, deep sleep. How many steps you take, miles walked, calories burned.

Tells you how many hours you sleep, deep sleep. How many steps you take, miles walked, calories burned. I've had a fitbit for several years. I like to be able to measure things rather than generalizations like I am walking more; I am not getting enough sleep etc. The numbers are right in front of you & are usually quite accurate. I also have started to log my weight as well.
