Ryan Barnes??
Ugh. Thought I remembered the name, so I did a little research. Wish I hadn’t refreshed my memory.
Barnes is more than a goon. He’s bad news. He was suspended for 25 games while playing junior, for using his stick during a brawl, an act he was later charged with assault for. He’s nasty.
More worrisome though, is his relationship with David Frost. Frost, as you will recall, is the agent Mike Danton tried to have killed. Various reports state that Frost has a cult-like hold over what are known as his “special players” of which Danton was one, and which, you guessed it, Barnes is also one. Sheldon Keefe is another, and if you check Keefe’s track record, it ain’t a pretty one either. I do not know if Barnes is still connected with Frost, but given that Danton still professes allegiance to him – from prison – I would assume he is. The players Frost is associated with have all been regarded as locker-room problems.
I do not like this.

Was he signed by the Bulldogs or the Habs?

HAMILTON BULLDOGS SIGN RYAN BARNES
Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 11:08AM bulldogs
The Hamilton Bulldogs announced today they have signed forward Ryan Barnes to a 25-game Professional Try-out Contact. The 25-year-old Dunnville, Ontario native played the majority of the 2004-05 season with the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL), recording 15 points (seven goals, eight assists) and 167 penalty minutes in 69 games. He also appeared in 11 games last season for the Kalamazoo Wings (UHL), posting eight points (three goals, five assists) and four penalty minutes.
The 6’1, 201-pound left-winger has played in 258 career AHL games, collecting 50 points (20 goals, 30 assists) and 652 penalty minutes. Barnes, who was drafted in the 2nd round, 55th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, appeared in two NHL games with Detroit during the 2003-04 season, going scoreless.

And do we want this dog, or more importantly, his trainer, hanging around our pups?

It's an ordeal masterminded by Gainey to test the true character of our prospects. Shall they fall under the sway of a cult of disordered personality, or not? Stay strong lads, stay strong! Do not give in to the temptation to run with strays.

More like a move to confuse the heck out of most people... well, me Vandermeer, Ivanans, Murray and now Barnes/Frost I haven't seen Hamilton play yet this year. Why is the team stocking up on fourth liners? I thought scoring was the problem. Goons don't score. A precaution in case the enforcement of the rules goes by the wayside and more toughness is needed perhaps?

We won't be seeing him in Montréal. Ever. He probably won't even pass his try-out with Hamilton.

In today's Hamilton Spectator, they had an article on his signing. Apparently his wife and child are still in Grand Rapids and he had hoped to stay there but things "did not work out". He is from a nearby town so he called Hamilton to see about playing there, so I don't think either Montreal or Hamilton went looking for him, but the other way around. Coach Lever was also quoted as saying he doesn't know much about him so he will just wait and see.
