Haven't seen any chatter about it. Thought I'd create a place to discuss both the women and men.
Canadian women are 3-0 in round robin after beating the USA 2-1 in their last game. They'd beat the Russians and Finns before that. Hats off to Saulnier for being the first person from NS to score an Olympic goal (siting CBC as source). Kudos to Meghan Agosta for taking unpaid leave of absence from Vancouver area RCMP detachment at 31 to come back and play for Canada. She's been a real mentor for the team and doesn't look like she's missed a step.
Canadian men are 1-0 after a pretty convincing win over a good Swiss team. Rene Bourque with 2 goals and Derek Roy with 3 assists. Rene is retiring after the tournament. The pre tournament interview had him getting pretty emotional about the idea of retiring because his family was more important. As frustrating a player as he might be, it's nice to see some humanity to remind us these are just people after all.
Canadian men have their second game tonight (in NA time) at 10pm est.

I prefer when we lose to the US in the prelims. Oh well.

I prefer when we lose to the US in the prelims. Oh well. US fired everything but the kitchen sink at Lacasse. Certainly played well enough, just couldn't beat the goalie. Canada wasn't sharp everywhere else. I think it can be a learning experience as they know they likely got away with one there.

Interesting question on the Habs last game: is there anyone from the Olympics who could still find a spot in the NHL? Derek Roy and Maxim Lapierre came up. Given our huge gap at center, it got me wondering if we could give one of them a player tryout and sign them this summer. I'm not holding out hope for Tavares, so the short-term solution is going to be depth so the coach can put together lines with actual centers...

European leagues are nothing more then AHL level.

Nope, though I recognize the Lapierre I miss is the Lapierre from roughly 8 years ago, and he might not be able to play that same style. It's annoying to see a guy like Dominic Moore somehow manage to hang on in a similar role while Lapierre faded so quickly.

I thought Lapierre would develop into a 25-30 power forward. He had the size and was a nasty piece of work in the Quebec league. When he came up, he started slow, by the second season started to move up his numbers....then collapsed.
I'm not sure how the heck he accomplished to be a has been by 25. Could of been coaching. We had Jacques Martin as coach back then, another worthless coach who disappeared once he was fired from the Habs. With the Canucks, he still didn't do much other then the pest role.
Higgins, Komisarek, Lapierre, the Kostitsyn bros, Obyrne, Dagostini, Chipchura.........other then Higgins, a whole lot of NOTHING.

I'd hesitate to consider offers before we see how they handle the Russians. Our team can skate well against this level of competition. The Russians are the closest to an NHL squad.
I mean, Bourque looks as good as he did in that playoff run a few years ago. And we know how rare that was.
They're cast offs for a reason.

Prime example of why I hate the shootout. On the anniversary of the 98 loss to the CZE, we lose in another. Our defensive zone coverage is pretty horrendous. Russia will light them up if they don't clean it up.

I stayed up and watched the game. The czecks got away with a blatant slash on a Canadian breakaway with 5 mins to go. I thought it should of been a penalty shot. I also wasn't too impressed with the overtime. We did a lot of running around. Still think Mete would of benefited from a trip to junior and a shot to play for Canada. I think Kryou and Thomas might of helped out too.

The Russians dominated the US 4-0. Still a lot of talent on that OAR team.

I wonder where Kovalchuk will be playing hockey next season?
I know left wing is not comparatively a position of great need in Montreal, but the Habs are 29th in the league in scoring goals. However, given the way Bergevin treated Markov (among others) and generally run this roster into the ground, the smart money says there is no way Kovalchuk would be interested.

Still, it's the kind of near-zero risk and potential medium to high reward move that Berg likes to make. We can offer him prime ice time too. I'd worry he'd want a 3 year deal though.

He will be 35 this spring. His legs look fresh in Olympic competition, but I would be concerned about it at the NHL. His shot is still elite.
Can't hurt to ask. I'd be unwilling to go beyond the deal that brought Radulov back to the league.

US beat Slovakia 5-1, so they will play the Czech Republic in the quarters. Quite the level and unpredictable field on any given night and at any given game.

The Koreans gave Finland about as much as they could handle for long stretches. Finland won on the back of 3 PP goals. After the game, the team circled the ice with Korean flags.
Former Penguin defender, and Cup champion, Jim Paek is the head coach. He was very emotional and clapping on the bench during the post-game festivities. Jim was born in Seoul, and is the first NHL player of Korean ancestry to play in the NHL. A great moment.

The Czechs have totally dominated the US in the second, and are finally rewarded with a goal. 2-1 now.
And the Americans tie it short handed. Crazy game.
Czechs win in the dreaded shootout. US is eliminated.

US is eliminated. Watching the Russians beating Norway. You can't help but root for Norway, but the talent gap is alarming. On their first pp they never gained the offensive zone and spent most of it chasing the play in their own end. If Russia has a weakness its in net. This goalie is huge, but sloppy imo. Hate the shootout. The Czechs play for it it seems. Hoping Russia can dump them. Canada against Finland in a couple of hours. In women's action, Finland holds a 3-2 lead for the bronze medal.

7 minutes into 2nd, it's scoreless. Scrivens forced out with injury 5 minutes into 2nd.
Canada outshooting Finns 22 -15 after 2 periods. Still scoreless. IMO Canada carrying the play but Poulin with some good stops in the final seconds of the period.
Edit: 1-0 Canada 55 seconds into 3rd. Noreau with the goal.

Gritty wins by Canada and Germany. Textbook prevent defense by Canada. They owned the faceoff circle and full commitment by everyone to get in lanes and win races.

Those faceoff wins in the last minute were huge. That really cut down on the time that Finland had to set up and be dangerous in the attacking zone looking for the equalizer. Amazing what you can do with real centres!!!!!!

CAN took the only three penalties in the first. The last one cost them as the US now up 1-0 after a PP goal in the last minute of play.
Stay disciplined ladies.
