Okay, I'm back. There is just too much good discussion on this board to stay away from it.
I thought I would take a look at the Canadiens draft history from 1990 to 2000 to see if there were any trends on who made the NHL. I left out the more recent drafts because most of these players haven't had the opportunity to make the NHL team just yet.
I broke it down by the numerical position where they were drafted rather than the round and came up with the following results from those 11 drafts. Only players with 100 NHL games are on the list (I included Hossa)
Position 211 - 240 (equivalent to 8th round)
Tomas Vokun 226, Michael Ryder 216
Position 181 - 210 (equivalent to 7th round)
no players
Position 151 - 180 (equivalent to 6th round)
Brian Savage 171, Stephane Robidas 164, Brett Clark 154, Darcy Tucker 151
Position 121 - 150 (equivalent to 5th round)
Craig Conroy 123
Postion 91 - 120 (equivalent to 4th round)
Paul DiPietro 102
Position 61 - 90 (equivalent to 3rd round)
Francois Beachemin 75, Sebastien Bordeleau 73, Arron Asham 71, Craig Rivet 68
Position 31 - 60 (equivalent to 2nd round)
Chris Murray 54, Rory Fitzpatrick 47, Mike Ribeiro 45, Jose Theodore 44, Mathieu Garon 44, Craig Darby 43, Valeri Bure 33
Position 1 - 30 (equivalent to 1st round)
Jim Campbell 28, Saku Koivu 21, David Wilkie 20, Brad Brown 18, Marcel Hossa 16, Ron Hainsey 13, Turner Stevenson 12, Jason Ward 11
A few things stand out. Only 5 players drafted during those years remain with the Canadiens. Only 8 players drafted in the 4th round or later (out of a possible 88 players) have made it to the NHL and stuck for any length of time. I think we should regard any late round draft choice who makes the Habs as a bonus. Our first round draft choices during that 11 year period have been less than stellar. To me it looks like only one elite player has come out of that group.
Hopefully Gainey, Savard, Timmins and company have reversed this truly unremarkable record
