I see these great hockey card photos posted in the GDT and was just wondering who here collects hockey cards?
Who may still do it or have their collections from long ago?
Like most of us all my childhood cards were thrown out when I left home and moved away but over the years I have managed to collect a lot again from the 50's Habs up to the mid 90's. I only collect Habs and players I liked as a kid such as Rogie Vachon. I do have pretty much all the rookie cards of Dryden, Lafleur, Robinson, Savard, Roy and so on which will eventually get passed down the family line I hope.
If you guys are collectors we may be able to help fill out each others collections.

I did for a while, most notably in the early 90s. Upper Deck and Score primarily. Have a couple of completely sticker book collections from the mid 80s.
Had Mario Lemieux O-Pee-Chee rookie card. It became a victim to the spokes in my bike. I was 8 lol.

I too had the 90's fad and still have binders full of the Proset series and maybe 1 or 2 sets of upper deck. I know they are pretty much worthless nowadays but they were collecting in it's purest form.
I got back into it right around when Crosby joined the league with Ovie. I obviously completed that upper Deck Series 1 and 2 sets and shelled out way too money. I bought my Crosby young Gun for maybe $450 (can't remember the exact amount) but it is graded and sealed 9.5. I got a few Ovie's too from some packs, where 1 was damaged and I was able to return and get an even better card (ice or black diamond). I was lucky to get a Gretzky notables numbers also which is an autograpgh card limited to 99.
My favourite set I have is the Ultimate set. I got all the base cards which in itself is pretty cool because they were limited and all the Jersey cards. Just the packs were 300 to $400 at the time for 4 cards.
I got a few others that are kinda cool. I had to stop because I realized I am a completest (someone who needs to get every card in a set) and was costing me way too much money at that time in my life. Plus baby number 1 was on the way. If you guys are interested I can post some of them here assuming I can upload pics.

I have an extensive collection that I kept up when I was overseas in the mid-to-late 80's/early 90's ... I got back from Germany in 1991 and I couldn't believe how much sports cards had taken off ... I have several years of Habs' postcards from the early 70's to the 100th anniversary set ... notable rookie cards in the collection; Russ Jackson QB, Ott Rough Riders, Patrick Roy, Mario Lemieux, Mario Lemieux (and all of the 80's rookies that go with that era; Al McInnes, Doug Gilmor, Cam Neeley, et al), Guy Lafleur, Ken Dryden, (most of the Habs' rookies from the 70's) ... Randy Johnson P, Jose "Coco" Laboy, Montreal Expos ... Steve Garvey, Buck Martinez, Cito Gaston RCs ... the oldest cards I have are 1951-52 Parkhurst hockey, Tom Johnson RC and Ken Mosdell RC ...
Cheers.

I went all in on The Next One Eric Lindros. Have dozens of 'limited edition' cards before he even played a game in the NHL. As a 12-year-old at the time I thought I'd be rich off those cards one day. Ha!

Cheers.

I've got one Eric Lindros rookie card and that's it ... the Scott Niedermayer is a good one to have, too ... Cheers. I remember briefly meeting him in 1991. Some local group organized a celebrity golf tournament with Pepsi as the backer. I believe it was called the "Diet Pepsi Pro Hockey Golf Challenge". Lots of current day hockey players and people who paid large sums I'm sure to play. I caddied. Lord knows what Pepsi paid him to show up. I don't remember him playing. He spent most of his time there walking around surrounded by a mob and signing autographs. Glenn Healey was the player in my group. Despite the fact I was supposed to be caddying for a Pepsi exec, I chewed Healey's ear off lol.

I had several hundred cards in the late 50's and early 60's...all gone.
I wonder what they would be worth today...

I also have the Kraft 75th anniversary hockey discs (from the peanut butter) with the Album... pretty interesting. dekes2dangles.wordpress.com/2013/02/13/hump-day-hockey-cards-kraft-dinner-dilemma/

I would love to but it'll have to wait until my daughter moves out. They were all setup in the basement with all my other sports related items in my man cave... but my daughter moved back in and the cave got taken over and my things got put away for now. I've also got a few Muhammad Ali items and Star Trek things as well.

I remember playing "knock down" and winning tons of cards. Of course, the cards took a beating! My Hab cards were perfect collections for several years. Then at twelve, we had to go back to the old country and all of it was given away. I think it was either 6 or 7 complete years including trades. Late 50's and early 60's. I remember bit and bytes of them but now.......so long ago!

I'm still looking for a lot of the high numbers in the set that weren't always available where I lived ... here's a card from that set ... Manny Sanguillen was probably one of my fave ball players back then ... he'd hit anything whether it was in/out of the strike zone ... the best spray hitter of his day, IMHO ...

In 84-85 O-pee chee had a contest where if you got a pack with a golden checklist you could send away for a prize. I ended up getting one, and the prize was the full set for the year on three large uncut sheets. Of course being a 10 year old kid the notion of collectible value never entered into my head, and they were put up on my bedroom walls with tacks through the corners to secure them. I still have them, but in pretty poor shape. There were a bunch of interesting rookie cards in that set, including Yzerman if I recall correctly.

If we knew then what we know now.....LOL Even funnier, I'm working on a new, very high tech film for my product line that could also be used to preserve those for generations.

Nice story, Andrew ... those uncut sheets would have been worth something nice ... I've seen other uncut sheets at various flea markets, here and there ... it's easy to get ripped off buying sports collectibles at a flea market ... but if you research prices to what items you're interested in beforehand, you'll know right away whether you're being taken ... those would have been nice, though ... I'd still hang on to them, for sure ... Cheers.

Not a fan of Danny Bonaduce ... Shirley McLean was already established and the show launched Susan Dey's career ... back to hockey collectibles; I have the same photo hanging on my wall downstairs ... it's the 1961-62 Hull-Ottawa Canadiens and, yes, I picked it up at a small flea market in Smith's Falls, ON, for $10 ... the guy I bought it off got it through an auction, so there's another option if you're pursuing vintage collectibles ... I've seen quite a bit of vintage items; posters, cards, comics, die-cast vehicles, stuff like that ...
