Our very own Kyle Chipchura was named captain of Team Canada, which I believe is a first for a Canadiens prospect.
This will be a very fun tournament for Habs fans to watch as Latendresse is going to be counted on to score, and Chipchura will lead the way as captain, most likely in a more defensive roll.
Best of luck to Team Canada and our two Habs boys!

That's certainly a nice feather in the cap. I watched TSN's report from Vancouver last night. Apparently the coaching staff have put Guillaume on a diet. He was asked what his weight was when he was a presence at the Canadiens' camp. He said he was 228 or so. Upon arrival to camp he tipped the scales at 238. They promptly put him on a diet to lose 9 or so pounds. Could be his conditioning and diet suffered a little after camp and caused the sluggish play to start the year. He did look great against the Russian selects though.

Another 20 or so minutes can help get that extra beef off the big guy. Great to see Chip get the well-deserved "C", this guy just brings a lot of good little things to the rink. Gui will be exciting to watch against some of those smaller forwards, as he should eat them up. If Mikus and Emelin can now join our Canadian kids and young Kosty who is playing now in the WJC B event, then lots of good stuff for us Habbie fans to cheer for over turkey and fixings.

Yeah, but he only projects to a third line centre in the NHL. And according to "montreal" Yemelin will be an assistant captain for Russia. Not bad for a stay-at-home defenseman. Damn, those cranky pills are quite effective.

I noticed in the game against Canada in the WJCs last year, that the longer the game went on and the worse things got for Russia, the more they played Yemelin. I'd rather he were 20 pounds heavier, but even so I think we've got a good one.

I have seen a couple of interviews with Chip since his appointment as team captain and he is one composed and well spoken young man in front of the camera. He really talked about his role being to lead by example out on the ice...you just cannot have enough players with that attitude and work ethic. Glad to have him in the organization.

In that way, he reminds me of Mike McPhee...

you can never have enough character/leader type guys. he isn't going to get 20 goals, so forget about that, he also isn't the greatest skater. it will be fun to watch him and latendresse lead this team to a medal. Hoping for a silver, a gold would be a huge upset.
i'm going to probably go to a junior game every day from boxing day until the gold medal game. Are there any other prospects on other teams that i should watch?

Juraj Mikus of Slovakia and Alexei Emelin of Russia are Habs' prospects so it would be great if you could follow them too.

A few comments about the Canada/Czech exhibition game. Firstly, let's pray that Justin Pogge is a solid goalie, cause Devon Dubnyk gave me no comfort at all. He fought the puck a fair bit and just didn't look loose and comfortable. The defense was ok. Staal seemed solid and Barker was fine too. Kris Russell, who I was concerned about because of size, is a great skater, but isn't going to move anyone from the front of the net. FYI, BC, Bourdon had an occasional error, but was otherwise allright. He didn't stand out, though. The D as a whole was fine, but the Czechs didn't seem to have anyone who could create and beat others one on one. They may have been playing possum, since about 6 guys didn't dress, including Marek Schwarz, who you'd have to peg as their #1 goalie. The goalies who did play for the Czech Republic were ok, but also lucky with several bounces that went their way rather than Canada's.
One has to keep reminding oneself that this was their real 1st game, so they were still not smooth getting out of their own end or on counterattacks. As they play more, these aspects will improve and they'll be better. From an individual basis, here are some impressions, all on the Canadian team.
Chipchura. Seemed to have spaghetti arms occasionally. He had trouble collaring the puck and moving it quickly. It could have been butterflies as he got stronger later in the game. His skating is ok. It seems like he's lugging sometimes, but at others, he cruises along very well. No doubt that he's smart. On one PK, he took a difficult pass in his skates near the face-off circle along the right boards and was immediately checked by one opponent. The defenceman had the blue line covered and you often see players try to backhand it along the boards and over the blue line, but it would have been a very difficult, low percentage play. Instead he had patience, saw a team mate 20 feet away between the face off circles all alone, gave him a good pass and it was iced. He didn't have any offensive chances, but his role on this team is a defensive one, on the 3rd line (playing left wing, BTW, not centre). He was on a line with Andrew Cogliano and Blake Comeau. Cogliano has speed galore and Comeau is another smart, reliable player, but with more offense and good wheels.
Latendresse. Had a better than average game. Didn't dominate in any way, but had about 3 good chances that the goalies made good saves on. Comeau took one d-man wide on the left wing and dropped a back pass to Lats at the top of the face-off circle and he one-timed it very quickly, but it was stopped. In the 2nd, he had a 2 on 1 with someone else, got fed in front, but the goalie anticipated it and blocked the in-close shot with his pads. The 3rd good chance was from being a bull coming out of the corner. He almost had the puck checked off his stick a few times, but kept going toward the net and got off a very hard high shot that was again saved. That was more of what I was expecting. He fell a few times, but I think the ice in Kelowna wasn't at its best. The puck bounced a lot and more than a few players blew tires.
Other forwards who stood out (no one really stood out, but these were noticeable). Jonathan Toews. He'll be a high pick for sure. I'm not sure who I'd compare him to. He's fairly tall for a 17 year old, reasonably strong, though not overly so, good puck handler and passer and scored a goal on a very quick wrist shot off a pass on a PP. Upstairs where Norman keeps his mother as the saying goes. It was in and out so fast I thought at first he hit the crossbar and I had a very good view from my seat. Pouliot was good as well, though his hard hit on a player drew blood and he got the automatic 5 and a game. That was near the end of the 1st I think, so he missed most of the game and Sutter had to adjust his lines. Comeau I liked a lot (Isles draft choice in 04). Can you believe it, that's it. As I said, it was hard to find stand-outs. I was really not impressed with Michael Blunden (who looked like he was labouring big time with skating) and Aaron Downie. Neither one did anything interesting, until they teamed up to score the winning goal. I still wasn't impressed. I'm a little annoyed that Devon Setoguchi didn't make it and the guys who beat him out (Downie, Toews, Cogliano) had better be good. Toews and Cogliano are ok, but Downie looked out of synch and not strong enough, not fast enough, not big enough. Watch him become the MVP just to spite me.
I don't believe the Czechs are anyone's favourite to do especially well, and if they rested some of their better players, our guys had better improve in a hurry. We may have a better idea after tomorrow, when they play Russia, who s/b one of the better teams. If we're going to win it, it will have to be with finishing our checks, playing flawless positional hockey and getting great goaltending. I'm not confident we can do it, but who knows?, Lats could relax and start to light it up, and Pogge could be the only good thing the Leafs have. Let's hope so.

Gets an assist on the PP in his 1st game. Also named sparkplug of the game. 2 pims and a -1. I missed most of the game due to the video being out but I got to see the 3rd for free and in the few shifts I saw, he played on the PP and PK with Lapierre. His skating looked ok but he seemed a little slow but I'll get a better look at him another time hopefully.
