New York is probably a comfortable environment for Kovalchuk. He owns a house there and there is nice size Russian community.
Of course, it is a little odd given the Rangers rebuild plan. But with ticket prices being sky high at Madison Square Garden, management cannot totally disregard the entertainment factor even while contending in the short-term is no longer realistic.
It will be interesting to know more about the contract when it is confirmed.
