Leafs officially announce that Lou won't be back as GM. Contract is up as GM. Is to move to sr advisor role. Dubas and Hunter are primary candidates.

Brian Burke's hearing that Dubas will get the nod.

That will be very interesting. If Dubas is the new GM, I wonder how Hunter will fit in, or if he's willing to fit in. If not, is he available (and frankly I don't care if Bergevin is currently the GM)

I read this morning that this was thé original agreement. 3 years as GM then a term as advisor. He is 75. Not sure this was a firing.

He was not fired, he had a three year deal as GM and Shanahan decided not to renew it. Likely he had a conversation with Lou and it was a mutual decision so they could move Dubas into the job. There were stories that other teams wanted to talk to Dubas so Shanahan had to up his role or lose him.

It seems like a sensible move. Dubas was developed in order to be promoted.
Could another club be interested in Lamoriello for a vacant GM job? I doubt it at his age.

Wouldn’t touch him with the proverbial 10 foot pole. In Jersey he had no success after Scott Niedermmayer went to Anaheim. Not a coincidence. Yet one more example of a GM (or coach) living off one good or lucky pick. Lou was never good with contracts (Kivalchuk, Malakhov, Mogilny, etc). Just another average GM who rode the coattails of a great player and no CAP.
Yes it’s a contrary view but there’s a lot of evidence to substantiate that. Just check how ordinary the Devils were after Niedermayer left. Slowly sinking into the sunset. One good, perhaps lucky year when they went to the Cup final and were handled by LA. Lots of missed playoffs.
Just check out his draft record from 2005 to when he left in 2015. It’s amazing he wasn’t let go much sooner.

IMO he had a very bad habit of letting good UFAs walk without getting anything in return. Nidermeyer, Rafalski, Parise are some examples of talent NJ lost while he was there.

RE: Fired vs. not renewed.
It was Brian Burke, last night, who said something like, "It's not a good day when you're fired....so they'll give Lou a "funeral" day....then announce the new GM."
So maybe Burke was under the impression that Lou would've preferred to be renewed.
Whatever...Shanny appears to be following the deal as laid out. Nothing wrong with that.

Good point CH. there's been a lot of chatter the last couple of days about the type a personalities in Toronto and whether or not they're actually getting along. Shanny, Lou, Mike, etc. That's a lot of stubbornness in one room, and you know Mike is heavily involved in decisions. Burke had good things to say about Dubas; that he's not just an analytics guy (anymore). Says Kyle has worked hard since taking the job to become proficient in other areas. PS. I wonder how much Rogers is paying Burke for playoff insight ...

Shanahan secured Babcock before he hired Lamoriello.
Unorthodox, but time was of the essence and Shanahan was on a mission.
Maybe it never sat well with Lou--knowing that Mike was the main target.
On last night's panel, it was said, "Lots of alpha males there...."
I'd argue that pro sports is full of TOP alpha males....and that it's the difference in temperaments (as you say, blny, personalities) that determine "mesh or clash".
You have to find the right alpha-mix.
If your hires are based on collaborative competence, you're on your way.

Doesn't sound like he was fired to me ... Brian Burke's "funeral" comment came across more like a joke, but I'd have to hear the comments to actually put them into context ... I don't have a reference for it, but I remember the TSN crew talking about Lou Lamoriello's hiring back in 2015 as being a temporary one (based on him being 72 yrs old back then, I suppose) ... more recently I read a Toronto Star column that refers to Kyle Dubas as being heir apparent to Lamoriello ... as an aside, I think that new consultant position could be nothing more than a thank you from Brendan Shanahan for drafting him back in the 1987 draft ... that's just me ... Cheers.

Analytics over the eye test, as it were.

The party line is that they are simply following the original plan. In real life we know that once a person is used to something, (power, prestige, money, status) it's very hard to let go. Given that Lammoriello is undoubtedly a Type A person, giving them a job where they get paid to do nothing (my ideal job btw), would kill him. It would drive him nuts. Type A people literally die from that situation, or move on to something else where they have some real power.

I don't think this move will do that. Dubas is quite highly regarded and since I have not a great deal of respect for Lamoriello as a GM, I think this will improve the Leafs. I kind of wish we would go in that direction....namely a younger guy who is more in tune with the evolution of the game today and less tied in to the old boys club.

I hope Lou is online taking a Babel French language course. At 80 with Alzheimers he is still an upgrade over Bergevin. You kill me Ron.😁 To me, the path is not that simple or clear. Yes the league and rules have changed. The skill level of all the players is much higher. No more Terry Harpers on defense with good defense and no offensive skills. You still have to build a team around the players on the squad. The big bad bruins and Flyers had big tough players and they adopted a style built around their roster. We have a big slow old defense and we can not turn them into Karlson or Orr. (or Subban) We have an abundance of mediocre forwards and can not turn them into the Gretzky Oilers winning games 9 to 8. We have a superstar goaltender who is injured or just plain tired or no longer hungry. We have a GM who is generously classified as a failure if not the worst GM in Habs history. We have a weak (terrible) farm system devoid of talent and winning tradition. We are saddled with bad contracts. Free agents have many reasons to not want to come here. Mistakes of the past 6 years continue to hurt us. Recognition of the new NHL does not ensure success without wholesale changes and even with a new roster of 25 new players does not ensure a Golden Knights success.

I didn't want to start a new thread and since it's a continuation of this one......Lou Lamoriello's Reign of facial hair terror has begun on Long Island
I guess the question is "How long can Lucky Lou last? He's 75.

I don't think Weight did that bad of a job as coach. He had no defence or goalie last year and the gm did nothing to help him out.

The goaltending may have been the worst in the league. The Isles scored a lot, but having Boychuk and DeHaan injured for as long as they were hurt their D and Halak and Greiss were .908 and .892 (Yuck). Weight may have indeed gotten the short end of the stick.
While not a fan of Snow (LOL), I thought his moves the last couple of years were better. He totally ripped off Chiarelli in the Reinhart deal for Barzal. His trade for Nick Leddy was good.
His drafting is still hit and miss. For every Barzal or Beauvillier there's a Ho-Sang or Dal Colle. I think he'll be find another job, though, on the same team that hires Michel Therrien.

what does that say about Chiarelli when he gets fleeced by Snow? Fans of Dallas & New Jersey are still thanking him for his lack of foresight.
