You'd think from all that lighting pole hanging and paper bagged bottles, you'd think you'se talking to a bonyfied beer expert...but you'se be wrong. Letting the secrets out, I's a chocolate milk affectionado...(Sealtest is best) So, beside my dark moo stuff addiction, i'se got a favor to ask... Back in the 80s, I use to have an occasional Brador, 40 years later, I still like a beer on Sacred Steak Saturday. Problem is that there is no more Brador and I've kind of settled for Guiness. It's ok, but my memory, fragile as it is, seems to remember that Brador tasted better (to me). Then my other favorite was Labatt Porter. Heck, I almost drank two a week of those... So, knowing I'm part of a community that has renown beer experts, or at least developing ones based on our teams performance, does anybody remember Brador and Labatt Porter and what are the equivalent tasting beers now? The other thing I notice is that Wiki says Brador was a light colored beer and i remember it as a dark beer. The Porter was dark. HELP!! Any recommendations? Besides, given the teams performance, now is a good time to embrace alcoholism....

Did someone mention malt liquor ... used to drink Brador back in the 70's because it had a higher alcohol and, of course, it was cool for a teenager to drink a stronger beer ... malt liquors tend to be a tad sweeter because extra sugar is added to beer to give it that increased alcohol content (had to look that up, buds) ... some other malt liquors are Molson XXX, or Colt 45 Malt Liquor ... I've had the Molson XXX when it first came out and I never bought it again ... haven't had Colt 45 in years and can't remember what it tasted like ... sorry, man ...
Cheers.

I went over to the liqour store and bought a couple of different porters. I was given a quick lesson on stouts and porters. Apparently they are considered "winter beers" and they only carry about 30 types around September. Another interesting thing he told me was that a lot of specialty beers contain citrus. Something I really don't like because it tastes bitter to me.
Considering I have one beer a week, it might take me a decade to come up with my next favorite.....

Once a week I'll go into our neighbourhood watering hole and have a "peck and a pint" ... that's a Talisker single-malt whisky and a pint of Guinness ... left Moosehead Lager a long time ago ... had an oatmeal stout here in town a few years back and it was surprisingly very good ...
Cheers.

I tried Fuller's London Porter and liked it. It almost tastes like Guinness. What I don;t like its the price of these beers. Sure, there was a 10 year gap between the last time I bought beer, but at $3.20, it's ridiculous price for a half liter can of beer. Here is a review of it.... www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/71/221/

I remember going to the forum back in the 70's and if you asked for a "Labatts" you'd get a 50, if you asked for a "Pilsner" they'd give you a Blue and if you wanted a "Molson's" you'd get an EX ... The tavern my broomball team would frequent after games was the Carleton Tavern (Parkdale area, Ottawa) ... they had two doors to the tavern; one for "men" and one for "Women with escorts" ... they were the second-last establishment in Ottawa to remove the latter ... the last tavern to have both of these doors was the Prescott in Ottawa's Little Italy ... by the way, the Prescott still has one of the best pizza 'n pitcher specials in the downtown ... good days ... It's still a quality upper-end lager, but I stopped drinking it a few years back because I kept getting skunky beer ... decided to give it a rest after taking my second case back ... Cheers.

I do the same with wheat beers ... developed a taste for wheat beer when I lived in Germany ... Dschens could probably tell us more, but I was fond of the Erdinger wheat beers ... if we went out for supper I'd usually have an Erdinger with my meal just to fill in the cracks ... you'd have a choice between crystal (clear) or dunkel (dark) ... I always went with the clear Erdinger ... Cheers.

Liking to get full value out of my $$, (aka cheap), and having enjoyed some Czech and Slovak beers at their country of origin a few years ago, I've tried some brands at the government stores. I've bought 500 ml cans for less than $2 each. I can't recall the brands, but they went down well. They're generally pilsners, though, so if you like ales you'll have to look elsewhere. There's a local craft brewery near here that makes a stout called 'The Back Hand of God" and I really like it. It has a slightly chocolate flavour, but I don't think they export any distance. It's called Crannog Ales. You'd have to come this way to get a growler. www.crannogales.com/collections/beer

I've had it a few times and it's very drinkable ... MacKinnon Brothers Brewery is also here in town, but I have yet to find a beer of theirs that I like ... Cheers.

We had 24/7 shifts and this was a way to make sure that we made time of whatever little time we had for ourselves. This ongoing for nearly 30 years. Which makes the choice of brew "special". The beer choice must complement the beef, porters do that. On the other hand sharp, citrus tasting beers seem to kill the taste of beef. Of course this is subjective. I don't know the difference between beers. I know a porter is dark and that's about the extent of "expertise".

I usually just have a glass of water with most of my meals ... it's whatever favours your pallet, though, me thinks ... I'll have a Guinness when I head out to the pub ... I like a cold draught with fish & chips ... used to drink more when I was in the service, but not so much these days ... bought a 60-pack of Coor's Light at Costco in Gatineau, CQ, and it lasted me 6 months ... that was a few years back ... I go to Quebec every 3/4 months, or so, on a beer run ... I'll pick up a case of Amstel, Grolsch, and Miller Genuine Draft ... I usually have Heineken lager on hand ... I can afford to buy these beers in Quebec, but not in Ontario ... and once the neighbours find out I'm going it turns into a real beer run ... Cheers.

Michelob Golden Light is a wonderful beer sold only in 10 states by Budweiser. Limited distribution is a marketing move by Budweiser to ensure that Bud Lite remains #1 in select markets. I tried it at the Budweiser Brewery tour in St. Louis. Tour and beer were great.

I am a big fan of craft beer, but tend to be more of a hophead who prefers IPAs, west coast Pale Ales, and even Amber Ales when wanting something a lot less hoppy. There still are a few good porters and malt liquors out there, so here are a few links that may guide you in some direction for those two beer styles. The 2017 Canadian brewing awards by beer category (they have a couple of porter categories): www.canadianbrewingawards.com/2017-winner-list/Top rated Canadian malt liquors: untappd.com/beer/top_rated?type_id=107&country_id=32There are so many more pubs that feature lots of choices of craft beers on tap. It is always fun to find a new favourite in your preferred beer category in places like that. We are blessed here in YEG with a liquor store that offers over 1,500 different beers. They have this glorious walk in cooler and they group their beers by category, so you can cruise your favourite style and find a new one to try. Slainte!

Up next is.....St-Ambroise Oatmeal Stout. Here is some opinions/rartings...thing I found about this site linked is that it's ratings are not far from our tastes. www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/194/2704/We found it to have even less bitter aftertaste then any porter/stout we have had so far. It's not really sweet, but more importantly, the citrus and bitter taste is not there. At least to our palate. Only 9 years and 50 weeks to go to find the "perfect beer".

Just checked online and ours is carrying beer, ciders, wines ... three other locations in Kingston ... may cut down on the beer runs to Quebec ... looking forward to seeing how the traditional outlets compete with this ... by the way, I'm sure you already know this, but The Beer Store isn't owned by Canadians ... a cut & paste ... ... the Beer Store is now owned by three multinationals: Molson-Coors, Labatt (owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev) and Sleeman (owned by Japan’s Sapporo). While all three have breweries in Ontario, their ownership resides outside of the country.... if Ontario ever privatizes the LCBO, I'm hoping a Canadian group purchases it ... Cheers.

I know who owns the Beer Store and never understood why the Lib****s would let this monopoly live. I hope Ford dismantles the entire beer and wine monopoly, it will help consumers. BTW...look for "studies" to pop up by union/monopoly stooges. All of a sudden "easily available beer and wine" will be right up there on how this has increased everything from murder rates to erectile dysfunction. What will be ignored is that you need to pass through designated check out counters in Walmart and ONLY between certain times. There is absolutely no difference if you buy it at the local monopoly hole or Walmart. Other then keeping more of your money.
