Interesting nugget from Pierre Lebrun in the The Athletic today: We heard the same denials from Bergevin right around the same time as well....

ya but Bergevin vs. Poile. I know who I would believe. Ditto. Lots of people trying to stir the pot, saying PK has worn out his welcome. I don't buy it. He's close friends with RyJo. The interaction he has with players on the ice is all positive, and there are plenty of pictures to show there's no tension. I honestly don't know where it's coming from. Tavares? I can't see it. They have big money committed to Johansen, Turris and Bonino. Even if they trade Bonino, they're not moving Turris to a third line role at $6 million a year. Ellis will be looking for a big extension, and Josi has two years left on his deal. There are ways they can accommodate those raises without trading PK. Rinne walks. Trade Craig Smith.

Why would Poile remake such a good D corp? You can make an argument that Subban is the top guy of that group. Poile needs to find himself a top flight goalie before anything else.

This is a result of the rumours that the Preds were interested in Karlsson. Subban isn't going anywhere

I read that interview between Lebrun and Poile. Poile acknowledges that he has to deal with keeping the defense intact and re-signing Ryan Ellis after next year and then Roman Josi the year after. A simple numerical solution is to trade Subban, but he didn't seem inclined to think along those lines. Craig Smith's contract ($4.25MM) expires at the same time as Josi's, so that's another relatively easy fix as it is easier to replace Smith (with Tolvanen for example) than to replace Subban. Nick Bonino could be traded or bought out and the other very simple solution that would require some dealing on Poile's part is to replace Rinne. He's faltered in the playoffs, his contract expires at the same time as Ellis' and he carries a $7MM CAP hit. So Poile has some other, more productive options than trading Subban.
I'd think trading PK is probably down the list of the actions he'd take to fix any CAP issues.

How about Weber for Subban? Do you think the Preds would go for that?

The Predators shot down the rumour right away ... Marc Bergevin does not work for Nashville and I believe them when they say that PK Subban will not be traded ... this whole fiasco started with some low-level journalist who said that "Subban will be traded" only to do a complete 180-degree phase shift when he was confronted with it ... Cheers.

How about Weber for Subban? Do you think the Preds would go for that? No, they want to move forward, not backwards ... Cheers.

How about Weber for Subban? Do you think the Preds would go for that? Jeje, I think I know the answer to that question. I wonder what the answer to these questions would be: Stan, I can pave the way for a Shawsie homecoming for you guys for the modest price of your 2019 second and 2020 second, what do you say? Hey Brian Mac, this is a nice draft class, I'll give you the 54th overall and the 62nd for Eller, do we have a deal? Stevie, how would you like to step back in time, Drouin back at you for Sergachev, 1 for 1? It is kind of sad when the organisations who tabled up with Bergevin for the defining deals of his tenure would laugh at the idea that revisiting/reversing the deal would benefit their hockey club.

The Habs are in danger of becoming the latter-day Expos. Best farm team in the league!

Can I get dibs on the first Subban/GAlchenyuk phone call after the trade?

The Habs are in danger of becoming the latter-day Expos. Best farm team in the league! Yes ... once players got too expensive, even the most revered ones were moved out ... when you have time please see " How Jeffrey Loria Destroyed the Montreal Expos/Washington Senators" ... it leaves out a lot of the specific, gory details, but it's good at detailing how the Expos were systematically dismantled ... one thing I'll give the Expos, though, they knew talent when they saw it and knew how to develop it ... that's a difference that I think Joel Bouchard and Dom Ducharme will make up over the next few seasons ... Cheers.
