Apparently the Habs were told weeks ago that they are not in the running for Tavares.
What an embarrassment and nail #57 in the Bergevin coffin. He doesn't even want an offer from MTL, the team that needs and wants him the most and can probably beat any offer out there. And who can blame him given the sh!t show that has become the Montreal Canadiens.

We're not contenders, we won't be contenders for years. We have a pretty big difference on taxes in many states. We have a third rate management team. But other then that....

Didnt even want to hear the snake oil pitch from that charlatan. He's no dummy.. and the mess has been laid bare for all to see.
I knew he wasn't coming and im sure MB did as well but no doubt was counting on being able to tell the fanbase that he gave it his best pitch but lost out due to some factor beyond his control... maybe even leak that his offer was better or the same.
Hilarious... yet painful

I don't know how much taxes & weather factor in.
If you get creative financial people involved you could probably ease the burden. And winter, well lots of good teams play in a winter climate.
The issue is plain to see. Bergevin & company have dragged this team down to the level of also ran that UFAs won't consider unless they have no other offers. They are years away from contention. Just 4 years ago they were in the ECF with a core of Price, Subban, Pacioretty, Gallagher, Galchenyuk, Markov etc. And ownership under Molson seems more interested in making money than winning games.
I can't even understand why Stastny would come here. Wouldn't he rather stay with the Jets?

I think we aren't putting nearly enough weight on how UFA's feel about the ownership and management of the teams to which they may go. Montreal must rank in the bottom 5 in that category and when you add in the tax situation (I doubt weather plays as significant a role...it's only because most of the low tax states are in the south that it seems that way) the Habs don't come off well. We get....the Alzners of the world.

We get....the Alzners of the world. That's what Bergevin has destroyed most of all. The credibility and perception of the Habs as an organization and team that guys want to play for. The tax issue is a factor, but I do believe that's nothing a winning team and culture can't solve. A few years ago we were riding high with an exciting and successful young core, but now that the losing and finger pointing has set in it's just too easy for good UFAs to cross MTL off the list. Molson might believe in Bergevin, or say he does, but the fans will vote with their feet and eyeballs and desirable UFAs won't come here unless and until they believe in what's happening on the ice and in the room. All this nonsense about "character", dealing away problem guys like PK and Galchenyuk for lesser talents, and getting worse in the process. Core fans can look for the positives but a guy like John Tavares is thinking about the next 8 years of his life and career and the situation in MTL is just too unstable. His agent is probably telling him that Berg could be gone within a year and other than his respect for guys like Price and Weber, there's just nothing appealing about the situation. Heck even THEY might be telling Tavares to stay away. So depressing.

I'd be staying away BECAUSE of Berg. No doubt it's gotten around to all the agents how he dealt with Radulov and Markov, how he supported PK, Galchenyuk and Pacioretty. Would you go to work for someone you couldn't trust to keep his or her word? Anyone who has any choice at all, stays far, far away. Which is ok with me. I think signing UFA's is a mug's game. It's the best way to ruin your CAP, to disrupt chemistry and heirarchy within a team. Imagine how most of the dmen on the Habs feel knowing Karl Alzner is making more than they are.
Nope, better to stay away, get more high picks and develop a team from within. Maybe sign a UFA when you're just a piece short of being great and for role purposes.

Imagine what guys like Price and Weber are thinking. Berg's decisions have rendered their enticement-values negligible. On top of that, Berg puts blame on "player attitude".
Double-whammy.
How can one be truly motivated when incompetence is allowed to continue running the show.

I think it is a perfect tool for making your team better if done right. I would use it like this. Sign X player for a 1 year big contract, then trade that player at deadline and get a prospect back to build your team. It is the long term high value contracts that hurt. ex: Andrew Ladd deals.

From what I'm hearing, most people in the industry like MB...like a lot. He's been in the industry a long time and has a lot of close friends on other teams, coaches, GM's, Presidents etc. The only people giving him crap are us the fans, and a few media people.

Excellent theory and that's been done. The Leafs did that really well during their re-build. The difficulty lies in that it works with marginal UFA's. The role player types....a bottom pairing defenseman or Penalty killing defensive forward like PLekanec. The really good UFA's don't sign one year contracts, unless it's skanky, such as is being rumoured that the Leafs will do with Tavares and then have a nudge nudge, wink wink agreement to sign a longer term contract after the year is up. I suspect the Board of Governers may not look kindly on those shenanigans, though TO may get away with it. Truly good UFA's want their money and their Term. It's the one time they have to strike it rich and signing a one year contract is risky (injury risk - performance risk). For a team on the re-build, it makes sense, though, to sign those role type players for one year and trade them in February. Stock up on picks.
