A Stanley Cup contender is going to pay its captain coming off a 91 point season and a strong playoffs. In the context of where Winnipeg is and what they can realistically hope to accomplish, the deal is more logical than illogical.

In the context of where Winnipeg is and what they can realistically hope to accomplish, the deal is more logical than illogical. He'll be 33 at the start of the new deal. That would be a concern for me. Sheifele, Ehlers, and Little are are signed long term to favorable contracts. Hellebuyck too. Laine will be due a huge raise. Likely in the area of what Wheeler will be making, but for 8 years. Excluding the Laine extension, these current long term deals equal $31.836 million. Buff's $7.6 million for 3 more years pushes that to almost $40 million. Laine's extension would bring them near $50 million for 7 guys. Extensions for Myers and Trouba are next. Neither will come cheap. I see one or both being moved.

Yeah, it seems a virtual given that Trouba is going to be traded at the draft next June.
Going back to Wheeler, I think it came down to what he has meant for their club and where the club is positioned right now. A team that could realistically win the Stanley Cup buys those mid 30s (33-37) UFA years from a guy who is the captain and has been great, not good, in Jets uniform.

Definitely a loyalty contract, but he's still a very productive player - benefiting from a strong nucleus. My expectation would be that he remains productive until 35-36 and the last 2 years become an issue, if he hasn't retired.
